Saturday 12th December – The Great Langdale Christmas Pudding 10km (Race One)

Report from Mick Jeffrey:

I entered this event a while ago not realising that my office Christmas do had been booked for the Friday. So a different pre-race routine: 2 pints of strong lager and a (Xmas?) curry.

I awoke on Saturday morning parched and with the normal post-curry issues. The drive to the Lakes was bleary eyed and at Ilkley I seriously contemplated returning home to bed but I persevered and arrived later than I normally like but with just enough time to resolve some of those residual issues.

The sky was blue and the ground covered in frost. I did some perfunctory warming up and arrived at ths start line frozen and purged in my Otley singlet. At 12.00 noon off we set on this challenging, undulating (hilly!) course. To my surprise and delight I ran a strong race throughout. I finished in 39.33, my best time for five years and an age-graded pb, 32nd out of 446. The race was won by Lee Cook (Tri Clan) in 33.05 with full results from ukresults.

Get this – unexpectedly I was first in my age category of twenty or so proper runners, not a bunch of Hershey munching wobble bottoms (no offence Steve). Howard is running the sister race this Sunday so I am keeping my fingers crossed for him!

I am now having a re-think for my approach to the Brass Monkey Half…perhaps three pints of Stella and a chicken Vindaloo. After all it’s worked for Ian for years…
