Sunday 6th December – Las Vegas Half Marathon

Report from Howard Jeffrey:

I am back in the UK after my visit to Las Vegas with work.

I was able to do the half marathon which was brilliantly organised by the Americans alongside the Marathon.

About 10,000 ran the full and 17,827 ran the half, two thirds of whom were women!

I was optimistically hopeful of a third place in my age category (MV55) with an anticipated time of around 1.30. Managed 1.32.18 for 262nd overall, rarefied air and dead flat (makes the Brass Monkey look hilly!).

Get this, unexpectedly second in my age category out of 369 in my group!

Weather was cool, sunny and windless. The route was up the famous Strip and back. Crowds cheering. bands playing, cheerleaders, staggered start, chip timing great finish area etc. etc. prize on the way.

Hopefully on the road back to some good form,

The race was won by Bekana Daba of Ethiopia in 61.40.

Watch Howard finish as bib number 1713 here.

Sunday 6th December – Luton Marathon

Email from Tom Paget:

After struggling in the heat at the Edinburgh Marathon in May, I’d promised to run a marathon in cooler weather, hence my reason for running the Luton Marathon today. I was very pleased to finish 97th out of 497 finishers in 3.19.57, particularly as it was quite windy – a comfortable pb – knocking 53 minutes off my time from Edinburgh!

I should also mention my dad, Jeff, who runs for Ilkley Harriers because there might be a few people interested to know that he finished 38th overall in 3.08.10 and first MV55 – maybe I’ll start beating him in 20 years time…

For anyone wanting an end of year challenge I can recommend this event. It is a three lap course, with three miles through grotty housing estates but the remaining six along pleasant rural roads. It is extremely well organised, and the relatively small field (approx. 800) means that there isn’t the logistical hassle of a large city marathon.

The race was won by Neil Renault (Long Eaton) in the impressive time of 2.26.14, with Michael Aldridge (Wooton RR) second in 2.37.03 and Matthew Blunden (Notts AC/RAF) third in 2.37.20.

Sunday 6th December – Percy Pud 10km, Sheffield

An email from Lloyd Best:

The lengths we go to for a free Christmas pudding…

We ran the Percy Pud 10k this morning. After a 30 minute ‘flood delay’, I came 75th in 37.52 (Huw’s training must be worth the pain – this was my third pb in the last 10 days!!). Karen was 170th (and second Old Bird over 35) in 41.16, and Elizabeth Ashton came 982nd in 56.03.

The race was won by Andy Ward (Clowne RR) in 31.30 followed by Darran Bilton (Leeds City) in 32.06 and Rob Baker (Hallamshire H) in 32.24.

Details and results from Steel City Striders.
