Report from Michael Fryer:
Some OAC members ventured south at the weekend to the Box Hill Fell Race in Surrey.
Huw Illingworth and Michael Fryer made the 225 mile trip down and were joined by London-based OAC members Tony Bourne and Tony Cunningham. OAC were easily the best represented club from the north and had there been a team results based on the top three runners, would have come in a very creditable fourth place.
The 7.5 mile course with 1,700ft ascent had more of the feel of a cross-country race than a fell race, though with plenty of very steep, muddy climbs it was a tough one.
The race was won by James McMullan (Thames Hare and Hounds) in 52:32.
Tony Bourne led the OAC team home finishing an impressive sixteenth (57:15). He was followed by Huw Illingworth 32nd (62:25), Tony Cunningham 48th (64:02) and Michael Fryer 192nd (87:16).
Out of the almost 300 people who entered, 214 finished the race.
