Sunday 20th June – Settle Hills Fell Race

7mls 1750ft

Report from Colin Best:

A lovely warm dry day so fancied heading out to enter this race. I have done it several times before and always think that this is one of the most scenic of the Yorkshire fell races. I have more time now to take in the views.

There seems always to be a surprisingly small entry for this race but was pleased to see Martin to double the Otley contingent. Martin pulled me round the first half of the course but steadily pulled away on the second half after the steep drop down to the road.

I was 6mins slower than my best time but that was 7yrs ago.

1st Chris Waters Ambleside AC 51:53

1st Lady Jo Waites Calder Valley 59:04

48th Martin Smillie Otley AC 73:56

62nd Colin Best Otley AC 77:29

83 finishers

Sunday 20th June – The North Downs Run 30km

Report from Tony Cunningham:

As one of Otley’s southern representatives, I felt duty bound to take part in the North Downs 30km Race yesterday as it is not often us London based people get the chance to do off-road, trail races in the local area.

The race has received good reviews from everyone who’s done it before so I was intrigued to see if it would live up to its reputation. It did.

Most of the race is off-road through woods, poppy fields and orchards and the bits on road were quiet and sometimes cobbled through quiet villages and graveyards! The hills were undulating and all runable (which makes a change for me) and the poppy fields were a sight to behold.

Will Green (Serpentine RC) won in 1:58:47 and I completed the 30km race in 2:16:27 and somehow managing to just squeeze in to the top 20 and finish nineteenth. I’d highly recommend this race to anyone in the area, in fact even if you’re not in the area I’d still recommend it.

Sunday 20th June – Staveley Stampede nr. Knaresborough

Report from Billy Rayner:

Competed in Staveley Stampede today, a scenic 10 mile multi-terrain undulating course. Slightly breezy, but the sunshine ensured it was very warm.

The turnout was disappointing with only 130 finishers and was won by Nicky McGee ( in 59.38. I was pleased to finish 64th in a time of 82.32, my second quickest time over 10 miles. It could have been a PB if I hadn’t got caught behind a slower runner on the first off road section where space was limited to pass. I ended up beating this runner by over 5 mins.

Sat 5th – Sun 6th June – Puma 24RUN @ Copenhagen

P1020114P1020138Report from Adam Baird:

I was invited over to Denmark by an old friend to take part in a race at the weekend. As they say, be careful what you wish for – when I agreed to go I didn’t know it was going to be a 24 hour race – gulp.

The race took place just outside of Copenhagen starting at noon on Saturday in what can only be described as scorching conditions. The course was a 2.7k lap taking in some hilly woodland, a bit of track and a lap of the camp site. There were a number of categories from solo runners up to relay teams of twelve.

I was in a category with a relay team of six, running for ‘Zorba International’ (apparently I was the ‘international’ bit) which unfortunately was reduced to five after only a few hours.
In our category the race was won by team LØBERENs Friske who covered 326.7km. We were delighted to come in second after a tight finish covering 318.6km, averaging about 4m30s per km or 12m20s per lap. I covered 54k at 4:42 per km (approx 34 miles at 7:30 per mile). It was good to get on the podium after a hard day’s work!
