Saturday 7th August – Borrowdale Fell Race

P1040181Report from Colin Best:

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend spent in the Lakes at the weekend despite a very wet Friday night making pitching tents an unpleasant experience and forcing an earlier visit to the pub.
Saturday dawned showery with low cloud covering the tops of all the fells so navigation was going to be difficult leaving Rennee, Sharron and Ben a little nervous about navigation.
Nick and Colin set off before the race start to run in reverse along the route hoping to be able to lend some support. However thick mist and rain was making our navigation difficult and just after seeing the leaders we lost the route all together and a timely compass reading plus the help of others supporting put us back on track to meet up with Ben and Sharron both very very anxious not to lose sight of their group. Unfortunately Rennee was not to be spotted. The was a shame as she and Ben were very close thoughout the race. Fortunately the weather improved for final climb up Dalehead with sunshire and at last, visiblity.

From, this 17 miles / 6,500′ race was won by Simon Booth (Borrowdale) in 2:52:42.

For OAC, Renee Saxton finished 190th (4:38:00), Ben Cousen 196th (4:39:13) and second claim member Sharron Smith 257th (4:57:52).

Race report in the Telegraph & Argus.

A post race swim in the river at Fitz’s folly helped their legs to recover for the evening.

Sunday was much brighter and drier and Ben, Renee, Bob, Andy Hunt and Sharron entered the Borrowdale Cycle race. The full distance was 45 miles – two laps with the first over Whinlatter and Honister and a second over Newlands and Honister. Just the one lap was enough for some.
For the less energic John, Carol, Nick, Colin and Jules had a walk and wild swim tour taking in up to three icy swims with our President gamely taking part. Some pictures in Club Photos.
