Tuesday 8th February – Phil’s History Book (Part One)

In a new feature, former Club President and longstanding OAC member, Phil Robinson, reminisces about OAC days gone by:

February 1988 – 23 years ago this month

Last Sunday’s Dewsbury 10k was my 1,026th race since I joined Otley A.C. after taking part as a guest in the club relay event 23 years ago.

In February 1988 house prices were booming, Ronald Reagan was president of the USA, Kylie Minogue, Bros and the Pet Shop Boys appeared on TOTP and on Saturday February 6th the best match in the top division of the football league resulted in a win for Luton Town over Oxford United by seven goals to four.

On Sunday 7th, world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson married actress Robin Givens and Otley A.C. held a relay race around the Darley (Duke of Wellington) course.

Under the supervision of club president Tony Allen and with Eric Smith patrolling the course making sure nobody took a short-cut, four teams of four runners did two laps each around the course that was later used for our February handicap for many years. I was one of six new guest runners – the others were Ken Dixon and his partner Lynn Walker, Pete Leeming, Tony Swann and Dave Cooke. I think all six of us were admitted to the club as new members at the next committee meeting; Dave later became Club President and Ken immortalized himself by devising a new handicap route around Swinsty.

Tony Allen’s newsletter for February 1998 logged my times for the two laps as 13.23 and 13.28 – ninth fastest of the 16 runners – my team came fourth and last. Club Secretary Phil Dean was over a minute quicker than me on each lap. The fastest times – 11.08 and 11.11 – were recorded by Dr Simon Ostlere; the next quickest lap of the day was run by Norman Land in 12.06.

Next month – Timble relays and Otley Half-marathon.

Sunday 6th February – Dewsbury 10km

From TDL, the race was won by Neil Renault (Edinburgh A.C.) in 30.41.

For OAC (all gun positions / chip times), Tom Potter finished 326th (44.02 – a large p.b. by 61 seconds), Phil Robinson 389th (45.55), Tom Hannah 577th (50.56) and Billy Rayner 632nd (52.31).

Friday 4th February – Sangcom Half Marathon (KSA)

Report from Nick Hodgkinson:

Six laps around the inside of the perimeter fence this time but a nice Bar-B-Que at the side of the pool afterwards.

This was part of my training (well actually all of my training) this week for the Marathon in four weeks time.

I have just found out that it is illegal to run in public in Saudi Arabia, so it is hardly surprising that I have not found anywhere to train yet (apart from races).

My time? A whopping 40 minutes improvement on last week’s effort.

See attached results here and note I was not last by finishing 23rd (122.39).

The Riyadh Road Runners Chairman congratulated me on being the greatest improver from the previous week and he also now believes that I might finish the Marathon in four weeks time.

I am aiming to be back in Leeds next week for the Harewood Handicap (part two of my marathon training).

Sorry – No pictures this time.

Thursday 3rd February – Moonlighting Training Night Report

Report from Liz Fawcett:

Thanks to all those who joined the hardy crew running around Thruscross reservoir on such a wild wet and windy night. About fifteen of us ran.

It was pretty slippery under foot in parts and even Andrew Robertshaw, the wisened fell runner, got a bit too close for comfort to the dark waters edge but it was great through the forest.

As always Moonlighting offers a change from the routine runs and the good company lifts your spirits so put next month’s moonlighting event in your diary on Thursday 3rd March. I believe Hugh has a route idea for the Ilkley area and more details to be confirmed nearer the time.

Wednesday 2nd February – Runner of the Month for January

Again a lot of excellent individual performances by members during January and the Committee voted to award the latest Runner of the Month title jointly to Sara Richard and Julie Dorling.

Sara recorded a pb in the York Brass Monkey Half Marathon (120.17) and a good time (53.16) in the Club Handicap around the challenging 10km road route of the Square & Compass at North Rigton.

Julie reduced her pb in the York Brass Monkey Half Marathon by over eleven minutes (120.50).
