Saturday 19th November – The Tour of Pendle

Report from OAC’s Matt Podd of the Tour of Pendle (16.8 miles / 4,830′) organised by Clayton Le Moors Harriers:

Five of OAC’s elite fell running squad, met early last Saturday and were transported in the Silver Machine (Hawkwind reference) to Barley for a trot up Pendle. Others joined us there for the fun and frolics.

Skies were very gloomy in Otley but lovely sunshine greeted us in Barley – not normal for this race – we all finished last year with varying degrees of hypothermia.

Good conditions (though muddy underfoot) helped us all to PB’s for this race, “possibly the most contrived in the FRA calendar”.

Won by Carl Bell (Howgill) in 2.21.48 and the first lady in 32nd position overall was Lindsey Brindle (Howrich) in 2.46.44.

For OAC, Matt John finished sixth (2.32.11), Sam Stell 37th (2.50.24), Renee Saxton 85th (and 3rd woman) in 3.05.43.

Hugh Pearson 157th (3.21.26), Sharron Smith 223rd (3.34.11), Jim Sneath 230th (3.36.26) and Matt Podd 259th (3.43.18), just beaten by Martin Smillie in the home straight.

363 masochists completed and the theme music for the day was by Pink Floyd.

  1. Sunbathing weather on Pendle Hill for the race. Matt John finished in 6th and Renee finished 3rd lady. I managed to finish 30 minutes faster than last year despite wearing the wrong shoes and struggling on the descents. Stupidly steep hills and glorious views – what fell running is all about!

  2. Well done to all the “Black and Whites” , great running Hugh, matt, and Renee. Credit to you all !
