Sunday 26th February – Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon

Report from OAC’s Ben Cousen:

2,108 people completed the defiantly hilly Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon.

I was the 108th finisher. This was the full-on road race experience: Well organised, a celebrity (Kelly Holmes) giving out the medals, bands en-route, goody bags, far too many water stations, horrible t-shirt.

It was won by Yared Hagos (Wallsend), the Ethiopian chap who won the Brass Monkey in January. This time he beat the course record in a time of 1.04.15, picking up a £1,000 bonus. There is not much to say about my dismal effort other than it was quite easily the least enjoyable running I have ever had and if there had been a chance to drop out without becoming subject to an even more demoralising walk to the finish I would have done – from 6 miles on I felt incredibly ill. Probably should not have started.

Anyway, by dint of my previous half marathons taking place in the more dissolute days of my youth pre-OAC (and because the first 6 miles were somehow ok) this was, by the clock, a PB performance of 88.46 (chip). By any other measure (not exactly sure what they would be), it was not the ‘best’ of anything personally, though the scenery was jolly nice.

Sunday 26th February – Great North West Half Marathon

Ian Broadbent reports:

I ran this today in Blackpool, attracts runners from all over the north,  it’s a quite flat two circuits course, luckily not too windy today, did 1:45:54, so two minutes quicker than my previous PB and 484/1080 – earned my fish and chips. Luke Cragg (Mansfield) won in 1:08:54.

Sunday 19th February – RaceKit Mini Mountain Marathon

Sarah Fuller reports: 151 runners enjoyed an absolutely beautiful morning in Calver, in the Peak District, for the third and last in the winter series of mini mountain marathons.

I had an average run (can I still use the Rombalds as an excuse for being tired? No – oh ok!), and misjudged my route to finish too early, not making the most of the three hour time limit.

Still it was awesome running, perhaps with a bit too much Tarmac for my liking (ie more than 300 yards!). I finished with 185 points and 80th place overall.

The winner was Andy Brown with 275 points. Awaiting results of the whole series.

Saturday 18th February – Eccup Handicap

Ursula had a battle royal down the long finishing straight up from the Eccup reservoir dam to finish a couple of seconds ahead of Debbie, one of 4 guest runners from Wetherby Runners.

Finishing in fourth Dave Cattanach went to the top of the Eric Smith Handicap table on 35 points, with Tom Marsh 5 points behind in second.  See latest handicap table for 2012 here

The heavy early morning rain conveniently abated by the time Antonio set off as the rabbit for everyone to chase, but there was still a fairly strong headwind round the reservoir and back towards the finish line.

A good turn out of 17 Otley runners, but the hononary handicapper had a lonely first 4 or so miles, so it would be good to see a few more of the ‘fast lads’ taking part in the new route devised by Colin from Calverley on the 17th March.  Thanks to Kath & Jack for course marking, time keeping & recording.
