Sunday 12th February – Liversedge Half Marathon

Tom Potter and Tom Midgley travelled over to Liversedge for the annual half-marathon on Sunday.

Tom Potter reports: “A rather hilly course for a road race, much of the course is similar to that of the Spen 20m race.

“I had a target time of approximately 1:38, this time was based on the 1:34 that I got at the Brass Monkey half-marathon three weeks ago.

“Really enjoyed the race and was absolutely delighted to smash my PB by 50 seconds finishing in 1:34 and 8 seconds – over 14 minutes quicker than last years race!

Tom Midgley (pictured right) had a cracker of a race and was fifth place overall in 78:55, Tom Paget 93:42, Howard Jeffrey 94:41 (I just pipped him at the last!) Mick Jeffrey 98:46 (Mick was clearly struggling with a leg injury), Jane Butler 110:51, Tom Hannah 114:33, Billy Rayner 117:10 and Sara Richard 121:33.

“If you’ve never raced the Spen 20m before I’d really recommend the race Sunday 11th March 2012.”

Saturday 4th February – Rombalds Stride

Sharron Smith’s reports:

The start to the new season and the Rombald’s Stride is always looked upon as a warm up for things to come.

But in sub-zero conditions this was a real test for the ‘seasoned’ of our club members. Ice on the off-road sections made the event more like a road race with obstacles. The real challenge was to beat the snow!

Our runners have been out training early in the year and Liz Fawcett made a debut to the event with Sarah Fuller taking her under her wing.

Karen Potter had a comfortable round but would have preferred the Pennine Bridleway Relay which was sadly cancelled due to the weather. I enjoyed a consistent pace even though the going was fast, but I still found a bog!

Hugh Pearson started off strong but the train seemed a better option home, as for the other boys on black and white, Matt Podd and Jimmy Sneath made really good going; having a fast start through Esholt and maintained their form over Baildon Moor to come home in very respectable times.

Karen Best and Lloyd Best took almost an hour off their times from last year; Simon Anderson and Liam Dunne lead the field and were nowhere to be seen at the start or finish, but I’ve been told Ryanair travels west so there you go!

Well done to all and maybe a few more Otley members will take up the challenge next year when the mud returns!

And a few words from Matt Podd:

A cracking day for a really fast race, though if you were over 4 hours the finish was in snow. Frozen Ground (but Sharron managed to find a bog to go in) and the new flag stones by the Trig point made it very fast, though a lot of sore feet.

Most of the folk I spoke to had pulled pb’s, Lloyd was about 40 mins faster and I was 35 mins.  Lots of Otley folk.
Liam 5th 2:49, Ed Davies 8th 2:57, Simon Anderson 20th 3:08, Karen Best 3:19, Lloyd 3:22, Matt Podd, 3;30, Jim Sneath 3;32, Sharron Smith 3:43, Karen Potter 4:37 ,Liz Fawcett & Sarah Fuller 4:38, Half Way Hugh – good training, and many more.

A copy of the full results can be found on Ilkley H’s website here. Won by Graham Pearce in 2.27ish, a record I think and Jo Waites 3.02.
