Sunday 3rd February – Mickleden Straddle Fell Race

Report from Simon Anderson:

Renee Saxton joined me for a trip south to enter the Mickleden Straddle Fell Race (£5 – 14.3 miles / 2,431′), ably hosted by Denby Dale Travellers.

In truly wuthering Pennine conditions the men’s race was won by Tim Ellis in 1:39:27 and the women’s by Helen Fines in fourteenth position overall (1:54:24). Both winners were from Calder Valley. Results here.

The course was easily navigable, and whilst typically a fell race in terms of terrain, there were no hands on knees moments. Having walked 15 miles to the summit of 9 peaks in the Lakes the previous day I decided to run this just for fun but was inevitably drawn into a race and I managed to come a lacklustre 57th in 2:13:06. Renee was just outside the prizes and finished 100th overall in 2:21:16.

We were both impressed by the dedication of the Mountain Rescue teams who marshalled the course and the well renowned post-event catering!
