Report from OAC’s Caroline Marler:
The first ever Indoor Inter Area for Masters was held at Lee Valley Stadium, London.
Six teams competed, Southern, VAC, Midland, Eastern, N.Ireland and South West – sadly no Northen Vets team.
As I wanted to have another run indoors before the season ended I paid my sub to Southern Vets a week before the meeting and was welcomed as an extra pair of legs. I felt at home wearing a Southern vest actually as I was born and lived in Hampshire until I was 22!
It turned out that I had to truly earn my membership by running in three events in the afternoon, which is something I am not used to doing in recent years. Normally I call it a day after one event.
I won the W60 400m easily in 71.0, second was 79.8. Unlike at the Europeans I didn’t go off too fast (too slow if anything) and burn out.
In the 800m I was 2nd as usual to Nancy Hitchmough (Dudley & Stourbridge) from the Midlands. She did 2.42.1, I did 2.52.9 and third did 2.56.1.
At the end of the afternoon there was a medley relay – 800m, 200m, 200m, 400m, so it was very important who ran which leg to get the best advantage over other teams. Our manager decided this meant I had to do the 800m, which horrified me at first as I thought my legs might be too tired. As it was I handed over second (as I had to run against Nancy again) but ahead of the other tems which was important and we finished second.
Overall the South team won the meeting but I ended up two days later with laryngitis and a chect infection – so maybe it was too many races!
