Monday 27th May – Ilkley Trail Race

Report from Tamara Weatherhead:

A sunny day and a good turnout for the Ilkley Trail Race (6.9miles and 700′). The race was won by Tom Adams (Ilkley) in 39.41, 10 seconds off his record. First lady was Louisa Pickles (Wharfedale Harriers) in 49.45.

The Ilkley town crier got us together and asked for Otley’s very own Tom Potter to come forward – his race number 70 coincided with the town crier’s birthday. After a fine(?) rendition of Happy Birthday we set off, winding our way through the top of Bluebell Woods and on up the never ending hill onto the moor. It was pretty windy up there slowing everyone but Tom Adams down.

Another race, another opportunity for me to mess up! This time I got lost in the woods on the way back down finding the only spot without a marshal or tape. I reckon I lost almost a minute. And my nose still hurts by the way.

For OAC, Scott Harrington came in an impressive second in 43.48, Joe Webster 51st 52.31, Matt Broughton 63rd 53.20, Tamara Weatherhead 72nd 54.41, Tom Potter 75th 54.47, Mark Beswick 77th 55.32, Neil Charlton 79th 55.37, Steve Robinson 98th 56.56, Ian Broadbent 101st 57.19, Andy Webster 128th 59.47, Gloria Jackson 234th 81.10.

In the 8-13 year olds, Jenson Brogden was second 8 year old in 11.23

Sunday 26th May – Driffield Mucky Duck 8.5m Multi-Terrain

Report from Reid Haddow:

The race started at Driffield Rugby Club at Kellythorpe in the East Riding of Yorkshire on a very warm – hot indeed – day.

Start at 11am, 214 runners, with most East Riding Running clubs being out in force but we did have an away trip from Pudsey Pacers who brought a bus load of runners and supporters with them. Again only one “Black and White” out – myself.

The race started round the corner from the Rugby club after we had all cheered the youngsters home in the fun run, which is always well supported.

Driffield Striders, the host club for the race, are always well organized – just like Otley A.C. are!

A long two mile run uphill, along the old Bridlington-Hull road, a very steady climb, before we turned sharp right, onto the mucky duck trails, way out into the start of the Yorkshire Wolds. The course was very undulating, with a hot burning sun beating down, two drink stations were available (and you did need them).

Parts of the course were very isolated, with many runners been spread out along the course, at five miles I was struggling again, calfs were very stiff and a pull on my right thigh but keep going Reidy lad, as we came down one of the long fields. I could see the church in Driffield in the distance, 7 miles, and we were back onto a short stretch of road, that led onto the playing fields surrounding the Rugby Club, came to the 8 mile marker, “Let’s go”, I thought but nothing in the legs, hang on, passed two people on crutches, sure I didn’t see them in the race or did I? And there it was, the finish line in front of the Rugby Club grandstand, a sprint for the finish, across in 74.04 for 142nd place. Disappointed? YES. Try harder next year. A distance of approximately 8.7 miles. Great run well organized, marks out of 10? an 8!

Results from here.

The race was won by Pumlani Bangani (Salford) in 47.24 and the first lady in 29th position overall was Jackie Lord (City of Hull) in 56.56

Cold night for this 10km trail race organised by Horsforth Harriers and road shoes were not a good choice on the muddy bit by the river. Low stress and not too hilly.
