Thursday 5th September – 3,000m Handicap & ROY

The first track event (of two) for both the Club Runner of the Year Championship and also September’s Club Handicap – the 3,000m held at Greenhead track, Keighley.

A knee problem, due for an op. couldn’t stop the lure of the track for Tony, the former track & road star & new man behind Otley’s persuit of its own track.  A generous handicap saw Tony take a clear win ahead of Gemma and Sara.

Scott recorded the fastest time on the night of 9.51 in 9th.  The main battle of the night was between those at the top of the handicap table, with the top two Ursula and Dominic setting off together, a strong last lap from both meant they picked up lots of points in 6th and 7th.

The leading positions in the Eric Smith handicap table is now Ursula 162 pts, Dominic 146 pts and Matt Podd 137.5 pts.

See full 2013 Eric Smith Handicap trophy table here and for records for our club 3000m races over the last 23 years see the handicap times spreadsheet here.

Thanks for another former track star, (8.40  – 3k), Peter McGouran for lap counting & time keeping duties.

Thanks for a really fun eve! Wasn’t sure what to expect as I hadn’t done a track run since I was about 12!! (Things had clearly changed in those last 10 yrs…) looking forward to the next one…

Thanks Andrew – always good fun. Knee op due Oct 9th so doubt my handicap will ever be so good again! Best 3k/5k? A long long time ago around 8.30/14.30. My claim to fame was winning the Midland Juniors 5000m track when I was 18 in 14.52. I reckon around 33% slower than on Thursday although I am probably carrying 33% more weight!
More importantly the Chevin Olympic Park moves onwards. In the next few weeks we will formally constitutionalise the project and will begin the funding/feasibility process. Thank you all for your support to date.
