Sunday 12th January – The ‘Nick Hodgkinson’ Harewood Handicap

The 2014 Eric Smith handicap series kicked off with the 4 mile route on the paths around a frosty Harewood House Estate..   Neil chased hard in the last straight but couldn’t catch David Cattanach who enjoyed his first handicap win since a victory at Esholt in 2006.   Not far behind Carol, Charlotte and Gemma made up the first five. Finishing mid pack, Steve Robinson recorded the fastest time of the day of 30.36.

The thirty runners taking part was also the most we’ve ever seen in the 12th running of this handicap devised by Nick Hodgkinson in 2003.

Saturday 4th January – Yorkshire Cross Country

Report by Andrew Robertshaw:

The rolling fields next to the Lightwater Valley amusement park hosted ‘The Ultimate‘ test for Yorkshire’s top runners.  The Hon. handicapper & Jon Greenwell lined up in the last race of the day, a 10,400 m spectator friendly twisting 5 lap route.  The underfoot conditions were best described as soft with a few muddy sections.

Both of us decided on having a steady start with the aim of picking off people as the race progressed & so it proved to be,  I was pleased to finish in 82nd (49:12) followed shortly after by Jon 97th (50:09).

Andrew Heyes of Hallamshire in 40:48 was a clear winner 44 seconds ahead of Jack Simpson, Leeds City and 3rd Marc Scott from our Harrogate League rivals Richmond, 41:51. See full results on the North of England AA site here.

New Year’s Day 2014 – Captain Cook Fell Race

Report from Graham Lake:

What’s fast becoming a festive tradition for the Lake family kicked off in some drizzle and a chill wind from Great Ayton village centre. It’s a 5 mile race with 1043′ of ascent up to Captain Cook’s Monument and back. There’s plenty of road, but the muddy bits really made up for it. The descent is really fast and exciting and worth the race fee alone. I was running with quite a few others for most of the  race, overtaking and being overtaken which kept the pace pretty high,  and the last blast down a footpath to the village was very  competitive. Not sure on position, but I knocked about a minute off
last year’s time, full results here: Esk Valley Fell Club. Hangover? What hangover?

ps. Graham finished 14th in a time of 36:28 and the race was won by James Bulman, North York Moors in 33.09 & 1st lady was junior, Bronwen Owen, Scarborough AC and 9th overall in 35:58

New Year’s Day 2014 – Giant’s Tooth Fell Race

Report from John Dade

A wet and soggy start to the New Year. A short and very enjoyable three-mile circuit with 400 feet of ascent around Ogden Reservoir taking in the climb up to the Giant’s Tooth standing stone. Most of this was on tracks with a few sections on woodland paths. Lots of standing water and mud. The best bit was a long descent on paths through the woods in pursuit of a lady in a caveman suit. I didn’t spot any Otley runners but it wasn’t easy as we were all zipped up in our waterproofs. No idea of my time. There’s a picture of the race results on Twitter but the times aren’t clear. I can say the race was won by James Hall in 17:10. I came 75th out of  124 entrants with a time of 25:26. Full results available on the FRA website here.
