Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th April – Highlander Mountain Marathon

Report from Sarah Fuller:

“would you like some chips with that beer?” Not the normal question you expect to hear at the overnight camp of a mountain marathon. Normally overnight is a purely functional (eat noodles and try and sleep) and mostly unpleasant (hide from rain in tent about the size of a postage stamp) affair but not so for the highlander Mountain marathon. Day one ended in the walled garden of a lovely old house in Inverailort (on the road to the isles), where there was a large marquee that we were later to discover would host a large selection of ales, whiskey, a ceilidh and 400 smelly fell runners. Sunday 27th April – Fountains 10k

Report from Howard Jeffrey:

Great conditions today for the Fountains 10K although everyone deliberating about road or trail shoes. Definitely trail as although the locals described the ‘grimpen myre’ as dryer than usual it was a bit like saying the Atlantic is wetter than the North Sea!

Mark Hall had a storming run to come in second place overall in 36.56 behind the winner Lee Dalton (Nidd Valley) in 35.59. First lady Sharon Barlow (Ripon) in 10th overall in 40.02. I had another solid come-back run in 53rd position in 46.50. Also for Otley, Justina Stringer in 220th in 1.02.17. 295 finishers in the full to capacity race (although 57 No Shows!)

Sunday 27th April – SSAFA 10k Cartmel

Report from Kath Robertshaw:
Jack and I recently tackled a 10k trail race in the grounds of Holker Hall near Grange over Sands.  We took part in this race last year and wanted to see what damage a year can do.
A mainly flat course with a climb to the finish.  The only problem is the wind as the course drops down to the Morecambe Bay coast.  There were a lot more runners than last year mainly from two clubs based in Barrow in Furness and Walney island.
We had spent the previous week on the North Wales coast and walked round a fair bit of the LLeyn Peninsula coastal path.  As usual with coastal paths we had climbed up and down several hundreds of steps. This was to prove disastrous once the race started.  My quads soon seized up and running was very painful. I could see Jack struggling in the distance and soon after 5k I passed him.  He complained of feeling dizzy but said he would continue.  After checking my watch at 9k I thought I could maybe get under 57mins.  Passing Jack had spurred him on and he caught me and said we had half a km to go.  However this last km was very long and I managed to finish in 59.36 with Jack recording the same time.  The general concensus was that the race was 6.5miles!!  The pleasing point was that I was nearly two mins faster than last year.  We were the only over 70’s and there were only 3 over 60’s.  Certainly a youngsters race!!!  The winner was John Rocke from Aberdeen Uni in a time of 35.44 and the first lady was Michelle Liddle 45.42. Jack & I finished 73 and 72 out of 135 finishers.
