Report from Sarah Fuller:
“would you like some chips with that beer?” Not the normal question you expect to hear at the overnight camp of a mountain marathon. Normally overnight is a purely functional (eat noodles and try and sleep) and mostly unpleasant (hide from rain in tent about the size of a postage stamp) affair but not so for the highlander Mountain marathon. Report from Howard Jeffrey:
Great conditions today for the Fountains 10K although everyone deliberating about road or trail shoes. Definitely trail as although the locals described the ‘grimpen myre’ as dryer than usual it was a bit like saying the Atlantic is wetter than the North Sea!
Mark Hall had a storming run to come in second place overall in 36.56 behind the winner Lee Dalton (Nidd Valley) in 35.59. First lady Sharon Barlow (Ripon) in 10th overall in 40.02. I had another solid come-back run in 53rd position in 46.50. Also for Otley, Justina Stringer in 220th in 1.02.17. 295 finishers in the full to capacity race (although 57 No Shows!)
First home for Otley was Ed. Davies in 60th, 3:43:03 followed by the 3 Peaks veteran John Armitstead 151st 4:02:15. The rest of the intrepid band were: 251st, Shane Ewen, 4:15:57, 266th Renee Saxton 4:17:21, 434th Graham Lake 4:42:57, 572th Jim Sneath 4:55:55, 698th Sarah Smith 5:44.
A fantastic turnout for the fourth race of this year’s handicap championship. Laura took the maximum points on the night finishing ahead of Neil and Billy. Richard Smith recorded the fastest net time of 25.10. The handicap table has got a lot tighter after last night’s race Gemma overtakes Kath and is now on 67 points ahead of Antonio on 64 and three all on 59, Kath, Charlotte, Phil Robinson and closely followed by Nicola Lee and David Cattanach on 58 and 57 points respectively and thanks to Caron on time keeping duties.
