Sunday 18th May – Brathay Windermere Marathon

Otley AC member David Hainsworth reports:

An outstandingly scenic route with the occasional undulation, the largest of which is just after the 7 mile marker. By far the hardest was the short rise as we entered the grounds of Brathay Hall and try as I might I could not quite run it all, even knowing the finish was just over the brow.

Well organised event with some road closures and good traffic management measures elsewhere and extra water stations laid one as it became apparent it was going to be a warm one.

I entered with ambitions of a reasonable time but with lurgy affected training it was always going to be ‘survival pace’ for me to get round in one piece. The first mile in just under 11 minutes set the standard – I used to be able to walk faster than that. Still enjoyed it, great atmosphere and highly recommended – but don’t expect a pb.

Race winner was Chris Merchant (Rochdale Harriers) in 2:53:26 and the first lady and 17th overall was Michelle Hetherington (Helensburgh) in 3:12:51.

David finished in 452nd place with a time of 4:50:16.

worth noting that Ian Fisher won the 2009 Winderemere marathon in a superb time of 2:35:34.

Full results.

Indeed well done David , to run a tough marathon like this one in 4:50 is not bad at all , in a flat terrain would be worth around 4:30 maybe also a bit less then that. I wish….

David, you did it, that’s the important thing! Hope you weren’t too shattered to enjoy a pint or three afterwards – you deserved them!

Good of you David ,it was worth noting indeed the massive achievement of Ian Fisher in 2009 winning in a super time of 2:35 the Winderemere marathon , a well done once more to Ian F. for that day of 5 years ago.
