Report from Hannah Mallinson:
Well us “older” ladies managed to enter two teams in the YVAA relays in Saltaire on Sat 21st June, massive thanks to Lisa Maughan for doing two legs and Julie Dorling for agreeing to join us so we could. The relay was for anyone aged over 35, consisting of 3 legs of 2.9m (although my watch said 2.7m) from Roberts Park in Saltaire. It was a very busy event with local clubs entering several teams across the age categories, some looking frighteningly fit and serious. Our teams consisted of Team A (V35), myself and Lisa Maughan and Team B (V40), Joanna Hobson, Sara Richard and Julie Dorling.
It was obvious we wouldn’t be wining and had all turned up with the attitude that we would do our best and enjoy a run somewhere new in the gorgeous sunshine. The route went out of the park and along the road for a little while before turning down onto the river past the rowing club, turning back round and down onto the canal tow path before going across the bridge and up into the park for a sprint finish. Despite none of us really being keen on flat courses or short distances this was quite an enjoyable route and we did ourselves very proud. I think we’d all agree that once we set off our natural competiveness kicked in and we all went for it, giving our all for the Black and Whites.
Both our team results have been put in the V35 category as it looks like there wasn’t a V40 one in the end and Lisa and I came 14th and Joanna, Sara and Julie came 15th. With the following very respectable split time; Lisa-22:15, Hannah-23:04, Lisa-22:22 and Joanna-23:28, Sara–22:32, Julie-23:10.
Personally I am delighted with my time as I haven’t raced at all this year and I’m far from fit yet I think this is probably the quickest I’ve run for a long time. I’m also pleased my hip held out and I’m not in too much pain today so a real step forward for me.
