Report from Graham Lake:
A hot day in Pudsey, but good organisation, and a great setting in the park with lots for family and supporters to do.
Bit of a last minute decision to race, and I’d not even heard of it before, so wasn’t sure what to expect, except, everyone I spoke to at the start shook their heads and said it was a tough course.
You go round the block once, coming past the start again, which was good to give a wave to the kids, then it wasn’t long before the course heads off-road down a rocky path where myself and a couple of Hyde Park-ers gained some time over the more cautious runners.
The race then dips into some much needed shade and climbs up through the woods for a mile or so. I felt good, so pushed on as we emerged on to the hot, exposed road section, catching my two mates from Hyde Park Harriers. Then it was down another rocky track and immediately you’re facing a steep, escalator of a climb, all the worse because it’s straight and you can see the top in the distance.
This was TOUGH, as it came late in the race, and I dug in, but lost some time to the runner behind.
However, felt strong at the top, and set my sights on catching the guy in front. I relaxed and just let my legs turn-over until I’d passed him going through the housing estate towards the end.
Nearing the end there’s a final hill up to the park, but luckily there was no one catching, so I could relax a bit. A nice shout from the family watching, and I was in to the park, and amazed to find myself in 10th place!
