Saturday 20th September – Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships

Captain Liam Dunne reports:

It’s not always easy to work up the enthusiasm to travel long distances for a 6km run in the afternoon and compete against the creme de la creme of northern athletics.
In the past we have struggled to get all our best runners available to compete in these type of events, this year we probably had the best twelve runners from the club but unfortunately one member went down with illness on the day of the event which left the B team one runner short.
However, this didn’t  deter the rest of the team turning up and they all ran really brilliantly, and were in 66th place at the end of leg 5.
Team A all ran out of their skin to finish in 23rd position overall (just 21 secs off a top 20 finish!) which is a fantastic result given the standard of the competition and the size of the club, probably our best ever result at this level.
The support from all OAC members for each other around the course was great and a special thanks to Caron and Annalise for their support and help in taking all the pics (Watch out David Bailey!) Not forgetting of course Flash the only dog at the event to don his club’s vest and bark on the team! Photos can be found here, Telegraph & Argus report here and Yorkshire Post report here.
Well done all.
P.S. If anyone is still interested in competing the Yorks vets cross country next Sun at Nunroyd Pk. Guiseley please get in contact with your d.o.b by tomo. The closing date was Sat but I have been offered and extension until Monday.

Sunday 14th September – Spen Greenway 10k

Report from Mark Hall:

I did the Spen 10 kms race yesterday. The race is run on a former railway line (now tarmac). It is 5k out turn around a marshal and 5k back, not too exciting. The course is not flat as it drags up for the first half and down for the 2nd half. I ran the entire race on my own as I did not start fast enough to get in the front group. The conditions were excellent unlike my time!  6th place, 1st V50, 35.19

No other OAC runners.   Winner: David Turnbull. Holmfirth. 33.41 (I think), full results to follow on John Schofield’s race results here.

Sunday 14th September – Garstang Half-Marathon

Julian Mawson hasn’t lost his magic as he takes third spot in the Garstang Half-Marathon. His time of 1:20:17 also earned him the MV40 prize.

The winner was James Hilton (Wigan Phoenix) in 1:15:49, second was Tim Raynes (1:19:38), and the first lady in 35th place overall was Jayne Taylor (Wigan Harriers) in 1:32:43, who also took the FV50 prize.

There 135 finishers. Full results and course route.

Sunday 14th September – The Yorkshireman

Report from Lisa Maughan:

To say that I was nervous about this race is a bit of an understatement, I was petrified! My hamstring has been niggling me this week, I had only recced the first half of the course and I had never done the distance off road before. I decided to go steady and use it as a training run. I actually felt really good until mile 17, when I crashed badly, but I quickly realised I hadn’t taken on any fuel. Two slices of malt loaf and an energy gel, and after a couple of miles I got my second wind to take me to the finish.

All in all it was a great race, well organised, friendly runners and a lovely route (except for the killer hill at the end!). I was pleasantly surprised with my time too, 5hrs 43 mins, well under my 6 hours target.

Full: 1st Shaun Wilkinson K&C 3:20:37,  1st Lady Charmaine Horsfall 4:01:46,  3rd Edward Davies 3:26:00,  Hugh Pearson 4:46:37,  Matt Podd 4:55:25,   Lisa Maughan 5:43:53.

Half: 1st Ben Mounsey, Calder Valley 1:36:55, 1st Lady Tanya Seager 1:51:28,  Shane Ewen 1:58:37,  John Dade 2:29:17,  David Fox 2:32:50,  Sara Richard 2:48:04,  Julie Dorling 2:53:05.

See all the Full & Half results here.

Saturday 13th September – Rombalds Romp – Fell v Trail

Two races in one, over similar distances and routes across Ilkley moor.  Otley’s Frank Beresford (trail) and Liam Dunne (trail), were first and second overall, in 44:16 & 46:29 respectively. Chris Miller, Harrogate AC first in the fell & 3rd overall, 47:51.

First lady in the trail was Myra Jones, Valley Striders 13th in 54:06, the 1st in the fell is a little unclear from the results either Helen Beck, Wakefield 57:20, or Deborah Gowans, Accrington, 57:21.  See full results here and lots of photos on woodentops here.

Sam Stell was first Otley in the fell, finishing 5th overall & 3rd in the fell in 51:36,  followed by Graham Lake 9th  (7th fell) 53:43,  Laura Clark (fell) 1:01:23, Laura Martin (fell) 1:01:35, (5th & 6th ladies resp.),  Andy Webster (fell) 1:08:34,  Shane Ewen (fell) 1:12:05,  Will Turner (fell) 1:12:47,   Antonio Cardinale (trail) 1:34:44.

Saturday 6th September – Sport Chevin Family Activity Day

Ian Broadbent writes:

The first Sports Chevin Family Activity Day was held with the aim of raising awareness for the campaign to bring sports facilities for all to Otley. Several hundred people attended events including hockey, cycling, football, tug of war, javelin and two runs.

There was a 2.5k and 5k run with the results below. This event will be repeated in the spring so let’s get behind it as a club and do all we can to help Tony Walker and the Back the Track committee in making the dream come true. Read the rest of this entry »
