Sunday 1st February – Dewsbury 10k

Report from Howard Jeffrey: I lined up at the start of the Dewsbury 10k today with 1075 other runners. No trace of the ice and snow from the previous few days but it felt pretty raw and there was quite a stiff headwind up to the halfway mark which is reached after a slight but definite incline. You do a tight hairpin round some cones in the road and follow the same route back to the finish so the second half is down then flat and today with the wind in your sails.

The race was won by Mohammed Abu Rezeq of Altringham and district AC in 31.02. Jamil and Frank (another PB) not far behind in 5th and 9th respectively, others and times below. 1st lady was Shona Fletcher, Richmond and Zetland Harriers in 35.57. I was 3/36 o/60’s but three minutes faster than last year and best time since early 2012! You have to be doing about 36 mins for 10k to be fairly confident of first place in the o/60’s, which is tough and my ultimate target.

My target today of sub 40? If you reach your target it was too easy…. right? The wind did not help and I was out in my super light flats so I could feel the calves tightening in the last 3K. That did not slow me down as I kept up with the others around me but it stopped me going faster. I could not have gained the 45 seconds needed and all things considered a satisfactory race.

Hot off the press: Jamil, Frank and Jeremy won the Team Prize. No Mean Feat. Excellent!

Report from Jamil Parapia: Sniffles for a few runners but this didn’t put off the brave racing the Dewsbury 10k in cold and windy conditions. The first 5k was straight into an icy headwind. I pity those who did not wear gloves. I ran out in 16.50 and back in 15.33 which has to be the biggest negative split I have ever run. There were some fantastic performances from Otley runners, most notably Frank Beresford (32:39pb), Jeremy Stewart (37:08pb) and Nicola Lee (46:15pb). Both Jeremy and Nicola took significant chunks off their previous bests. Frank’s time was was also admirable demonstrating the progress he is making. Otley took the men’s team prize. It was nice to see Howard Jeffrey, head down sprinting in to finish in P3 in the V60 category in 40.45. Great straight line speed.  The final Otley finisher was Eriks Zvaigzne in a time of 47:14.

2nd claim member Zack Whitehead returning from injury also ran 35:15

  1. Well done to the boys for winning the team prize and Howard for another sparkling informative write up. As always very reflective.
    Lots of Pb’s well done.

  2. I agree with Tamara , brilliant results by everybody ,especially the 5th of Jamil P. with 32:33 is just an awesome performance in a good quality field of elite runners, also Howard 40 minutes and 52 seconds is indeed a competitive result , that I could never achieve ,not even when i was twenty years old ,my best is around 43 minutes for 10k.Well done everyone.

  3. Howard – I gave your ROM wine to your brother last night. He said he preferred white… so get it fast.
Well done and keep it up Matt

  4. Well done all, looking young in the photo Jamil!, I think the coach should get Jackson over for the Otley 10….

  5. The photo from the T & A has Otley 10 on the numbers, but that looks like the cycle race, so was it the beat the clock 5k race? What happened to that? It must have been ace racing round Otley in front of those crowds, did the cycle race get too big in the end?

  6. And I see in the Wharfedale Observer the Howard has taken over from me as club president. Thank goodness for that!
