Saturday 21st March: British Sprint Duathlon Championships

Report from Howard (always eagerly anticipated!):

Hello remember me?
I have been keeping a light race schedule recently to train for the European long and standard distance duathlons in April. This has involved up to 3 hours on the turbo trainer which anyone has used a static bike will know is like watching 10 episodes of Midsummer Murders back to back on a spike! Also shorter speed and time trial sessions.
I ventured out on Saturday to Clumber Park (fabulous venue) mainly to attempt to qualify for my age group at the 2016 European champs. It turned out this race was also the British champs. I shudda, cudda, nearly came first in my age category! First run of 5 K in 21.16 which is not bad considering the lack of speed work recently, spent an additional 30 seconds fumbling with my headgear in transition but did the 20K bike three minutes faster than last year into a strong cold wind at times, averaging 20 mph, so the work on the turbo paid off! Managed a 10.49 second run of 2.5 K to finish a tantalising 31 seconds behind first place. I would have got the odd second in a race to the line I am pretty certain but the wearisome transition had cost the prime spot.
On the plus side I qualified for the 2016 ETU sprint which was the primary objective and also pasted people who would have expected to have been a couple of minutes in front based on past results instead it was the other way round. I came 170th out of 450 starters which is also solid enough and know I have to work on the transition.
The rest of the training schedule is worked out and with another month to go I think I can continue to improve. This includes a couple of 10k races at Guiseley and Wakefield so expect further rambling egocentric diatribes.

Sunday 15th March – Spen 20

Report from Andy Webster:

Had planned to do the Trimpell 20 this year instead for Manchester marathon training, but due to Sky TV moving the Liverpool v Manchester United game (less said about that the better) changed plans and did the Spen 20. I did this race last year and had not really enjoyed it remembering hills and hitting the wall at 16 miles.

Anyway quick chat with Rogan and Sara at the start then off we went. Kept a steady pace, running on my own most of the way round found actually the extra mileage this year helped. Felt strong for me and never dropped of my planned place the whole way round. Finished nearly 16 minutes quicker than last year in 2:42:52. Rogan took the hoboes getting around in his longest ever road race in 2:17:38. Sara Richard finished in 3:22:13. First male john Hobbs valley strides finished in 1:59:30 first female Shona Fletcher Richmond & Zetland 2:06:26.

Sunday 15th March – North London Half Marathon

Report from Frank Beresford: I decided to have a trip to London to take part in the first North London half marathon. The course was undulating. It started in Allianz stadium and progressed through the streets of North London taking the runner though the impressive Wembley stadium before returning to the start point. The race was well supported, with several music bands along the course to enjoy (if only very briefly!) and running through Wembley stadium was just fantastic. I managed to get elite entry for the race which was great, as I meet the legend Mo Farah, some of the Run fast runners from Kenya and received free food which is always a bonus!

There were some very strong runners field (who all seem to have raced and been beaten by Ian Fisher). At the start line I felt proud wearing the Otley AC and progressed well during the first half of the race for a 71 minute half marathon, unfortunately I seemed to have got a bit distracted when I run through Wembley ( I think I was enjoying myself a bit too much!) and slowed down. The latter stages of the race where uphill with a slight headwind, this meant I was unable to make up for time lost at mile 7 and 8 to get a PB. Due to this I decided to relax and just enjoy the race. I finished 10th and was just beaten to the line in a time of 73.36. I was happy with the performance as my aim was to finish in the top 10 of the race. Overall it was an exhilarating experience. I am however feeling the effects of maybe racing too much, so I will be resisting the urge to race for a few weeks to get some solid marathon training in my legs!

The race was won by Peter Limo, Run Fast, in 65.35 and first lady, in 19th, was Gladys Lato, also from Run Fast, in 76.22. Results

Saturday 14th March – Liz Fawcett Leathley Handicap

John and Charlotte battled it out over the last mile or so for the win, John taking the honour by 10 seconds.  Nicky took third a couple of minutes later just ahead of Gemma.  Setting off on a 32 minutes handicap Scott recorded a swift 34:55, 16 seconds quicker than the time that saw him pass the whole field last year.

Finishing 4th moved Gemma to the top of the table on 57 points one point ahead of Chris Tomlinson and two ahead of John Armitstead.  See the full table here.  There should be lots of points on offer at April’s race as it’s the popular Fewston evening race.
