Tuesday 12th May – Jack Bloor Fell Race

Report from the Hon. Handicapper

Sunshine and strong winds greeted a large field of runners in the senior Jack Bloor fell race.  After a comedy false start, when the organiser inadvertently said the word ‘go’ during his pre-race speech, we were off.

Just after the start it goes straight into a bottle neck as the path narrows to single file, followed by the steep climb to the Badgerstone, which does give plenty of opportunity to catch up on lost ground.  At this point I was shoulder to shoulder with Jeremy, but a strong run down to the Swastika stone gave Jeremy a big lead on the second climb, the long drag to the top of the moor.  After passing Caron spectating at the summit cairn, I pretty much maintained my position in the race all the way back to the finish.  Further ahead I could see Sam running strongly, however a minor route error and fall meant that Jeremy just pipped Sam to be the first back for Otley.

Results 1st Jack Wood from Ilkley Harriers, 40:10, and Claire Green, P&B first woman, 48:25  & for Otley, 16th Jeremy Stewart 45:24, 18th Sam Stell 45:34, myself 46:48, Andy Hunt 47:48, Tom Lynch 50:44, Tom Paget 51:40, Laura Martin53:35, (just missing out on 1st LV40), Andy Webster 58:03, Laura Clark 1:00:40, Matt Podd 1:00:58, Christian Hosker 1:02:03, Colin Best 1:07:59, Lisa Maughan 1:12:56 & of course the one and only Antonio 1:39:18.

Thanks for supporters around the course, Kath, Caron, Graham & Shane,  see some of Caron’s photo’s here.

  1. We’ll done everyone; enjoyed watching you all. Sorry I couldn’t stay to cheer Antonio but it was getting cold up there. Jeremy ran really well, as did Sam after racing ButtermereSailbeck on Saturday (as did I and there’s no way I could race again so soon). Good to see Andy H running well again, & Laura Mhad a great run.

Personal highlight was seeing Greg Hull take a great tumble – not quite as epic as Andrew’s in Llanberis though!

  2. Surprised Jeremy caught Sam, he had 20 yds on him at last checkpoint. That said, I lost 8 places last year at that point!
Good to be out watching for a change. Have we (has Sarah) managed to talk Derek into joining yet? :o)

  3. Results are out on Jack Bloor website. Good race – I think I won……. the prize for the most blood shed. Well done all, a fine night.
Charlesworth Chase on Saturday – 11.00am in Appletreewick, up and down Simons Seat.

  4. I would have appreciated your cheers Shane because I had a bad night and I was struggling on the wet and muddy moors , I did not like the slabs , they are uneven , all sort of shape and very easy to fall. Lisa M. had a good ran with 1:12 is an excellent result , also Laura C. and Laura M. both ran a super race on this difficult and wet terrain , Tom P. had a superb performance on the Ilkley Moors with a very good result , and Andrew R. having already won this race back around 2005 ,on the night he ran in 46:48 that is not bad at all. Well done everyone.

  5. 16, Jeremy, 45.24; 18, Sam, 45.35; 27, Andrew, 46.48; 39, Andy H, 47.48; 62, Tom L, 50.44; 80, Tom P, 51.40; 99, Laura M, 53.35; 126 Andy W, 58.03; 141, Laura C, 60.40; 143, Matt, 60.58; 148, Christian, 62.03; 181, Colin, 67.59; 193, Lisa, 75.56; 226, Antonio, 99.18. Good turn out

  6. My 2nd ever fell race. I’m really not very well suited to them, but they are great fun… and cheap!
