Wednesday 20th May – John Carr Series, Race 3

Report from Jamil Parapia: Wednesday night saw the final race of this year’s John Carr 5k Series. Having grown up in Guiseley it is nice to see some familiar faces from school years and it gives the opportunity for family to watch the race. Furthermore now that I work in Bingley I feel it is important to support the races organised by some of our parents and teachers. Saltaire Striders are a lovely club and congratulations to race organiser Helen and her team for the work they put in. The money raised in memory of John Carr, a former member of the club all goes to various charities.

The conditions were quite windy and this coupled with the additional tarmac to make the race measured, meant that times were not going to be comparable with last year’s races or indeed the first race. Nevertheless everyone blasted off as usual hoping for a personal best. Personal bests duly arrived for Charlotte Tomlinson who crossed the line in 24.38 not too far ahead of Donald Buffham. Nicola Lee produced a strong performance knocking a second off her time from last week as well as beating some rivals from other races. The strong wind seemed to scupper Tom’s attempt at another pb but to come within 3 seconds is a great effort. Mark won the series in the Vet 55 category, and Zack was second in the MO for the series. After 3 consecutive podium finishes, Scott won the John Carr Series beating his nearest rival by 22 seconds in the cumulative times. Rather bizarrely I finished the race 2 seconds slower than the same race last year. However, on closer inspection of  Garmin records it would appear that the ‘new course’ is 100 odd metres longer than the final race last year.  Given that yesterday was “remeasured” I am going to count it as a new PB even if Power of 10 obsessives don’t. Ian’s V35 record remains intact for the time being at least until someone moves the cone again and we get grassed up. Interesting in education we offer ‘short course’ GCSEs as separate qualifications to ‘full course’ GCSEs. I wonder if we should introduce a new short course category for club records. Just kidding! Just kidding! Thanks to Lord Anderson for spurring me on to victory on his posh racing bike. 😉

  1. Well done everyone, top results all round for Wed. night & the overall series, I’ve updated the records, V55 now 17:24 for Mark from race 2.

  2. That is a beautiful victory Jamil , Congratulation indeed 15:36 is super and winning in Esholt is a great result , to win twice is lovely. Also Scott H. had a good ran with 16:02 and Zack W. with 16:08 ran well. Mark H. had a powerful performance with 17 :35 not far from his club record of 17:24. My friend Donald also ran well with 27: 22 that nowadays is not bad at all .Compliments to Charlotte for her 24:38 . Well done everyone.
