Report from Graham Lake:
I really enjoyed the Otley 10 on Wednesday night. My mantra this year is to only race off-road, but I fancied a bit of a change, and being a hilly course knew I’d enjoy it. It was 4 years since my last attempt at this, before I joined Otley AC, so no pressure of a particular time meant I could just relax into it and see how it went.
A big field left the new estate road in glorious sunshine, not too hot. I had a vague idea I might try and keep up with Sam Stell, but by Pool he’d got quite a lead. I could see Ian, Tom and Robin for a while too, but they were soon pretty distant.
The first hill was much longer than I remember, but I gained a few places (although 1st lady absolutely stormed past me), then the left turn gave a view of the Chevin in all it’s summery glory before the long, fast, fun descent. Hill 2 is hard, but you know you’re downhill from the top, so mentally not too tough.
On the long downhill mile to Otley I could see Sam ahead, so I pushed on and soon got within 30 yards or so of him. My plans of trying to sneak up on him in Otley were scuppered by Tamara’s shout of “Graham’s catching you” just as we got near home :o)
I thought I might just catch him on the line, but my last push wasn’t quite enough and we finished with the same time.
Good to see Ian racing again with a great 2nd place, and thanks to the marshals for all the encouragement on the way round, and to Colin and team for organising the whole thing.
