Wednesday 24th June – Whorlton Run

Graham Lake reports: Went up to Great Ayton to help my Dad move house this week, and, oh look! A fell race is on just down the road!

Whorlton Run is part of the summer series organised by Dave Parry, and is a trail race really (under FRA rules) of exactly 10k. It was a gorgeous warm evening, and the climb up to the top of the moor was steep, but mainly runnable. There followed a fast run across the tops battling with the super fit Kay Neesam of New Marske Harriers. After hurdling through some heather, there’s a full mile downhill on forestry tracks, sub-5 minute miling mid-race looks good on my Strava stats ;o)
There’s then a lovely run through the woods on the Cleveland Way which kept the heat down. Managed to finish strongly on the slight drag up to Whorlton Castle in 12th place 45.45.
Lewis Rogers of Loftus & Whitby won by some distance in 39.27. Cat Taylor of CLOK (no idea) was 1st female in 5th in a brilliant 43.25. Full results
P.S. The course had been marked 2 weeks before, but hardly any of this was still there as the RO proudly told us at the start! Probably why Mike Jefferies who was out front ended up way down the field!

Tuesday 23rd June – Danefield Handicap

The juniors stole the show on a perfect summer evening.  There was no holding back Adam on the 2.9 mile course including the long climb to the top of Old Pool Bank.  Holly easily held off Mick and the chasing pack for third where Ed recorded the fastest time of the night, 17:14, although he couldn’t quite match Jake in the sprint for the line.

Chris Tomlinson moved to the top of the Handicap table, 103pts, after finishing 15th on the night. Hugh Pearson is second 2 points behind, followed another point back by Dominic Egan.  See the latest Handicap table here. For the full list of race times and points  Read the rest of this entry »

Sunday 21st June – British Masters 5K

Report from Mark Hall:

I drove over to Horwich, Lancashire, to compete in the British Masters (veterans) 5 kms Championships.

The race is held on a closed circuit of 3 laps. The lap has a 300m climb on each of the 3 laps. On the day, there was a big head wind blowing down the climb, which was reflected in slower recorded times than  last year.

I was 3rd V55 in 17.31, 25 seconds from the win! not a fast time but I am pleased given injuries and lack of speed work, (excuses really)

The V55 winner was Andy Weatherill, Mansfield in 17.08.  Full results here.

Sunday 21st June – Pudsey 10k

Report from Frank Beresford:

Frank_Pudsey10kPudsey 10k is a course which is both undulating and a combination of “light” trail and road. The weather was grey and the sky spat with light drizzles of rain, which is not to be expected in June!

I entered Pudsey 10k in its 25th Anniversary to test myself on tired legs. I came to the race with 70 miles in the legs form the previous 6 days of marathon training and my legs where not feeling too fresh, however when the race started most of the tightness in my legs seem to go. I started the race pretty fast and managed to have a clear lead after 1 mile into the race, Thereafter I descended into the woods and really did try and push myself on my own rather than relying on other runners to do the work for me. It was difficult to remain keep concentration through the trails but I was soon awoken by a few of the hills on the course! The last mile was on the road which I enjoyed, it felt good to actually get my legs moving on the open road for a change and I finished the race with a clear lead. I am unsure of my time, but I do know I was unable to obtain the machine, Ian Fisher’s record!

After the race I did 6 miles on tired legs for Yorkshire Marathon training, and enjoyed the Prize of the Cake that was given to all the prize winners.

Provisional results on the Pudsey pacers site here.  1st. Frank Beresford 35:08, 5th Robin Outtersides 37:37.

Saturday 20th June – High Peak Half Marathon

Report from Christian Hosker:

I ran the High Peak Half Marathon on the 20th June. This was the 2nd of a series of three races, run over as many days, which together formed the “Tour of Tameside” and covered a full marathon distance. The Tour dates back to the 1980s when it was created by Ron Hill but had ceased in 2003, until its revival this year.

Tour of Tameside

Photo from the original race series, for the oldies, name the Stockport harrier wearing no. 1.

The half marathon on day 2 commenced in Hadfield (aka Roston Vasey), just outside of Glossop, Derbyshire and was a straight out and back along a slightly featureless disused railway line. There was a gentle climb out for seven miles before an about turn allowed those with more endurance in their legs than me, to stretch out for the finish.

The race, and the Tour were both won by Mohammed Abu Razeq of Altrincham and District (HM 1:11:31) and Kirsty Longley of Liverpool Pembroke Sefton (HM 1:30:59). I finished 42nd in the half marathon with a time of 1:38.21.  Full results here
