Sunday 6th September: Wissey half marathon

Report from Mark Hall:
Wissey half marathon (incorporating British Veterans half marathon championships)
300 starters
Winner Phil Sanders Kent ac 1.11.28
My time 1.17.26
10th overall

A couple of months ago I started to think about this event and as it approached it motivated me to train harder. After a long period of injury I needed a focus and despite lacking race fitness the old diesel engine was still turning over even if there is the odd misfire.

I drove the 160 miles to the event, south of Kings Lynn on the day, not the best preparation but circumstances dictated that I could do no different.

I had previously won the British half champs in 2011 as a V50 and finished 3rd behind a certain Paul Evans(2x Chacago marathon winner) in 2003. I finished 3rd in the 5k British vets champs this year despite injury, so knew I had a good chance at the longer distance.

The course was said to be flat but was undulating with a mile long climb at 8 mile, conditions were very good. I managed to hang on to a small group that pulled me to the finish.

I finished 10th overall in the race. setting a 2015 UK best for V55 by a minute, which also gave me a British championship at V55 half marathon.
