Saturday 5th September: Derwentwater trail challenge

Report from Joanna Hobson
On Saturday 5th September I took part in the 10th anniversary Derwentwater Trails 15k challenge in Keswick. Having previously done the 10k trail I decided to challenge myself this year to what is described as the most beautiful 15k trail in the UK. It started gently with a lovely 3k along the railway footpath & then started climbing & climbing until we reached the infamous bottomless bogs of Glenderaterra beck. I survived the gentle undulation, the steep climb 1191 feet & the bottomless bogs & was eventually rewarded with amazing views from Lonscale Fell down towards Derwentwater. So what did I do… I allowed myself the luxury of looking at the amazing view instead of my feet & promptly fell flat on my face! So dusting myself down, I gently jogged the remaining 5k to a magnificent finish in Fitz Park & the sound of the fantastic Batala Band. I finished in a time of 1:42:04 in 251st Place. First male was Ian Dawson Blackpool Wyne & Fylde in 1:09:26 & first female was Helen Smith U/A in 1:13:56. An amazing route & definitely to be recommended & repeated another year.

Tuesday 1st September – Kilnsey Senior Crag Race

Richard Hamer writes: What better way to celebrate your birthday than taking part in a fell race of approx one mile with a stream to go through, three fences to climb over, fist-size jagged rocks to run and slide over and a descent so severe that there’s a safety rope? Oh, and a wonderful country show to look around beforehand. Plus coffee, cake and curry!

Kilnsey Senior Crag Race is the one where Matt Podd ended up with a cut leg last year after being hit by a falling rock, and it’s one of the classic fell races – short and sharp.

86 people started and for the winner, Simon Bailey (Mercia), it was all over in 8:01. Second place was Rob Hope (Pudsey & Bramley) in 8:08, and third was Ted Mason (Wharfedale) in 8:18. The first lady was Caroline Lambert (Wetherby) in 25th place in 10:48.

I finished in a heap in 78th place after a gruelling 15 minutes and 56 seconds. Having said that, I’m keen to have another go next year.

This year saw the return of the show’s handicap mile race after a nine-year absence, which took place around the showground’s grass track. The easy winner was Julian Hood (Barlick Fell Runners) who I assumed would also be doing the fell race but he was nowhere to be seen.

Pictures here and here.
