Sunday 6th December – Race 4 West Yorkshire XC – Nunroyd Park

Report from the Hon. Handicapper:  Nunroyd park in Yeadon provided another mud bath for the final race of this year’s league.

Juniors:  Well done to Jenson Brogden finishing 32nd in the Under 13 boys with a time of 14:37 and to Holly Davey finishing 30th in the under 13 girls in 10:22.

Senior Ladies:   Caron Ralph was Otley’s sole performer, running well to finish 70th, in 29:30.  The race up front was another close and high class affair with P&B’s Alex Bell finishing just ahead of Leeds City’s Claire Duck, 20:43 & 20:49 respectively and Katie Walshaw, Holmfirth H. 3rd, 21:08.  With three wins Alex Bell also took the overall league title.

Senior Men:   It was pleasing to see seven from Otley on the start line, so barring a couple of dnf’s we were sure to finish a team for the 3rd time this season.  I seemed to have a much better race than the previous race at Keighley, finishing 29th, 34:38.  It was good to see Ed. Davies racing cross country for the first time in quite a while finishing 70th, 37:33,  Stephen Small was next in 140th, 47:09, followed by Billy Rayner, 148th, 58:49,  Sean O’Halloran, 149th, 59:10, David Cattanach, straight off a flight from his holidays, 150th, 1:04:41 and Antonio Cardinale 151st, 1:07:24.  Otley AC 14th in the team competition on the day.

Simon Deakin, Leeds City took the win ahead of Tom Adams, Ilkley H. to take the win in 30:16 to 30:33.  However Tom took the overall league title with two 1st’s and a 2nd.

Highlight of the day though was a couple of honours for Otley in the overall league standings with Jackie Ackroyd taking 3rd V55 and Antonio Cardinale taking the 2nd V65.  Well done to Jackie & Antonio for their efforts over the season & to everyone else who took part, hard but rewarding in a masochistic sort of way!

Thank to Andrew for sorting these awesome series of races. Not everyones cup of tea but I loved them. Pleased to finish 10th MV35 (out of 11, but it’s not last). Well done to everyone who ran during the 4 races, with a bit of luck we can build on this next year. Let’s aim to finish a ladies and men’s team in each race next year.

Congratulations to all who braved the mud – good result for Andrew, and Jackie and Antonio got well deserved honours. Not sure how you can motivate more people to do XC – there’s a lot else on.

BIG thanks to Sean O’H for lending me his spikes, otherwise the race would have been more like an episode of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’
It was enjoyable in a strange kind of way.

I have some photos of you all scampering effortlessly across the surface of the bog/park, but I can’t get ’em off the darn camera! Hold the front page.

Too kind Liam , I did appreciated your nice words and to be honest there were only 2 Vet 65 and I could not possible win because I was the last one on all the 4 races , as you know I am really a road runner and I never have been any good at it , especially if there is mud , but I like running them , nowadays I much prefer cross country , then running the Burnsall 10 miles .
