Sunday 20th December: Denby Dale travellers 6

Report from Howard:

Despite a nice clear and relatively warm day there were not so many as usual at this race which I have done many times, 158 finishers. It is another race not for the faint hearted as it has three long fairly steep hills, with the same number of down dales (see what I did there?). There was quite a stiff breeze blowing us up the first two hills but on the return there was a moment when I was nearly blown to a standstill!! Mileage in the bag was the aim after a pleasant Park run at Fountains the day before. I was way off the age group pace and three minutes down on last year. Mark Hall however was not and stormed through to second place in 36.54 within sight of the winner Brendan Moody of Barnsley AC in 36.27. Considering he was probably giving a thirty year head start, no mean feat!! 1st lady Beth Massey, also of Barnsley AC 32nd in 43.39. I laboured home in 51st in 46.01

  1. Well done Howard, another mad race! What a brilliant year Mark has had, once again showing those young lads how it’s done.

  2. Well done Mark, old farts can still do it! nice end to a good year for you – injuries aside. You should try an ultra next year!
Howard, just draft behind a fat bloke in the windy sections.
It being Denby Dale I was disapointed at no mention of pies!

  3. I agree with Hannah L. and the President of the club Matt P. for the positive comments about Mark and Howard . Mark is just a extraordinary competitor , just few seconds from victory , compliments to former member Beth M. for winning the race with 43:39 and our Howard as well deserve a medal for racing all year round at such super level , 46:01 considering the difficult up and down of the route , is quite good .

  4. It was a tough event on a windy day with lots of hills! As I ‘degenerate’ I find hilly events suit so I might even do an ultra, thanks for the idea Matt. However, I still have a few road goals to aim for.
