Saturday 16th January – The John Cowan Harewood Handicap

After  months of rain the sunny forecast brought out hoards of walkers to the Harewood estate, making parking a little difficult.  A good turn out for the first handicap of the year saw Carol had a fantastic run to win her second handicap in a row,  I think I need to be a bit harder next time!  Tom Pomfrett passed nearly everyone in finishing second a minute clear of Phil in third.  Without a photo finish it proved to be impossible separate Hugh and Rogan who recorded the fastest time of the day.

Thanks to Jack & Justina for setting everyone off as I arrived a little late to get back in time from ‘flouring‘ the route.  The next handicap is the Eccup Alwoodley Lane (6 miles) on Sat. 27th Feb.

For those of you how like your race stats. I’ve updated the Handicap Times spreadsheet this means that Tom & Phil are now just 9 short of 200 handicaps and this was Carol’s 100th.  I’ve added a couple of columns to the ‘Runners’ tab for the average & variation of finish position as a percentage.  Handicap Times spreadsheet.

Saturday 9th January: The spine race

The clubs resident nutter Sarah Fuller is attempting the spine race starting on Saturday at 10am. The race  follows the length of the Pennine way (268 miles) and it’s rumoured to be a little damp underfoot and a bit chilly. Racers have 7 days to complete.

Saturday 9th January – Yorkshire XC

Report from Sean O’Halloran: Saturday saw the running of the Yorkshire Championship XC Race held at Lightwater Valley Theme Park, Ripon. As you can imagine being a Championship event this race attracted the top runners from all over Yorkshire.

The course was perfect for a championship race, plenty of mud, steep climbs, gradual climbs, and sections for face paced running. This was a tough XC race (my 8th this winter) as you had little time to recover from the climbs before the fast sections and the relentless, ankle deep in places, mud made it heavy going . But it was a great race and one I enjoyed.

The event followed the same format as other XC races; the junior races were then followed by the senior ladies and then finally the senior men.  Unfortunately there was no representation from the Otley juniors or from the senior ladies this year. However there were three of us in the B&W vest in the senior men’s race.

The ladies top three was as follows.

Pos Time Name Team
1 0:31:51 DUCK, Claire Leeds City
2 0:32:14 PARTRIDGE, Susan Leeds City
3 0:32:52 WALSHAW, Katie Holmfirth

The men’s top three was as follows

Pos Time Name Team
1 0:37:09 THEWLIS, Jonathan Notts AC
2 0:37:16 ADAMS, Tom Ilkley
3 0:37:27 BAYTON, Steve Hallamshire H.

The three from Otley finished as follows.

Pos Time Name Team
53 0:41:56 ROBERTSHAW, Andrew* Otley A.C.
268 1:13:53 O’HALLORAN, Sean Otley A.C.
269 1:17:00 CATTANACH, David Otley A.C.

*(Liam Dunne)

Report from Liam Dunne: Unfortunately my email from the club for entry into the Yorkshire XC got lost in cyberspace, and by the time I had realised entry had already closed. As I’m heading back to Ireland in a couple of weeks for the Irish National Masters XC, I wanted get a competitive XC race in and decided I would run the Yorkshire XC anyway and just pull out at the finish.

This year it was held at Lightwater Valley and when I arrived and viewed the course it looked like a proper traditional XC country course with sharp bends, long drags, short sharp hills and plenty of mud, all run over about 6.5 mile…..perfect! Maybe a little bit too much gluey mud but nevertheless it was right up my street.
Shortly before the start, I bumped into Sean O’Halloran who was there (this time in a OAC vest!) with his family. Sean told me that Andrew Robertshaw was down to run but pulled out due to an injury. So I decided I would give Andrew’s number a ride around the course! The only other OAC member that was entered was Dave Cattanach.
There were several hundred runners competing and when the gun went there was a bit of a mad dash for the first sharp right handed turn which caught a few out. The course was made up of one short and 4 long laps. It was an energy sapping course and it was obvious by the three quarter mark that some had completely misjudged the pace and really struggled on the last couple of laps.
I felt I had a good solid race and managed to finish in 53rd position with a time of 41.56, a time I was happy with but I was still Andrew Robertshaw in the eyes of results people! Sean and Dave also put in a good shift and finished 268th (1.13.53) and 269th (1.17.00) respectively and well done to them both for getting out there and competing. I’m not going to make a song and a dance about it but It would be great to get more club members out to just experience such an event.
The overall winner was Jonathon Thewlis (37.09) of Notts AC for the second year in a row narrowly beating local man Tom Adams of Ilkley Harriers.

Runner of the Month for December

After much deliberation the committee chose Laura Martin and Sean O’Halloran for our runners of the month for December. Laura for her outstanding performance at the Chevin Chase getting 1st FV40 in some rather damp conditions and a great run at the winter fools relay again in some less than pleasant weather. Sean has flown the cross country flag for the club in December completing several races with some fantastic performances and also a PB at the Stoop race. Well done to both. Graham Lake and Andy Webster also deserve a mention for some great performances though December.

Ilkley Moor Fell Race February 21st 2016.

Here is a link to a local race organised by Ilkley Harriers that your child/children may like to take part in. This is a well organised race and is great fun!

Middleton PECO XC Race Jan 3rd 2016

After all the festive fun Jenson Brogden, Aston Brogden and Holly Davey were back in action at the third race of the PECO series. Aston ran in the 1 mile race and Jenson and Holly ran in the 2 mile race. As you can imagine the course was really wet and muddy so the ‘Three Amigos’ did well to stay upright!

Sunday 3rd Jan: PECO XC

Report from Sean:

On Sunday I travelled over to Middleton Park , South Leeds, to run in the third race of this year’s PECO series. This was to be my fifth race in as many weeks.

The race was approx. 5 miles and run within the grounds of Middleton park, billed as cross country race but it was more like a trail race with plenty of undulating sections, mud and tree roots to navigate. It was good see the OAC Road Capitan Liam Dunne just before the start, apparently using the race to blow away some festive cobwebs.

It was also good to see the usual junior contingent who were running well…. Results not yet available.

The winner of the men’s race was Jack Smith from Wharfedale Harriers in 29.22, the ladies winner was Claire Green from Pudsey & Bramley AC in 34:14.

Liam Dunne finished in 31:42 (4th MV40) and Sean O’Halloran finished in 53:16.

Full results can be found here

Looking forward now to next weekend’s Yorkshire XC Championships at Lightwater Valley Theme Park.
