Sunday 7th August: Asda 10K

Report from Howard:

A big field of runners turned out for the Asda 10K today. I was surprised to make the start having spent yesterday, my birthday, feeling quite bad for some reason. The day was pleasantly warm but with quite a stiff breeze. Very well organised start in pens with expected finish times which were generally well respected. I expected a time of around 44 minutes and got to the 1K mark in 5 minutes. A bit slow but felt OK ish to find a good rhythm. The route starts from York race course and goes through the city, past the Minster and over the river so a splendidly scenic and mainly flat but winding course. It was just an average day at the office till I was overtaken by the 45 minute pacer at 9K. I dug in to hang on and overtake him to finish in a chip time of 44.55 in 347th position out of I don’t know how many thousands. The race was won by Adam Stacey in 33.00, first lady Bethany Garland of Chichester Runners in 38.33. Only spotted Melvin Hoare from Otley AC in the results who was 972nd in 49.11 (all chip times)

To run inside York city center and past the Minster has to be beautiful , I always been disappointed that the half marathon did not went in the same direction like this 10k instead of going off towards the countryside . Your 44.55 it is not a bad result for almost an average day at the office , I found hard to focus when there are thousands of runners around you . Well done to Howard J. for this nice race , also Malvin H. ran well in 49.11 in this popular event .

I agree Antonio, my half marathon pb many, many moons ago at the York Half did a loop on the roads round the race course then into the city and back round the race course loop. I like running on quite country lanes but a bit/lot of crowd support is always a boost to morale 🙂 Well done Howard & Melvin
