Tuesday 30th August – Kilnsey Crag Race

Report from Tom Lynch:

A short sharp country show fell race of the type that abound at this time of year, just over amile and 350 feet of climbing (or 1.66 km and 110 meters), a stream, a wall climb, a fence climb, then a death defying descent (with safety rope) down a limestone nick called ‘The Chimney’. Not to mention a fairly unusual feature for a fell race, a large crowd of non-runners and an arena start/finish, with the race being part of the schedule of the country show, I’ve never been an exhibit in a show before! Caron Ralph and myself made up the Otley team and I’m glad to say we both completed it physically, if not mentally, unscathed.

The winner of the race in recent years has always come from one of Simon Bailey, Ted Mason or Rob Hope, and it was not any different this year with Ted Mason (Wharfedale Harriers) winning in a PB of 7:58, Simon Bailey and Rob Hope took 2nd and 3rd places. First woman was Kirsty Hall (Wharfedale Harriers) in 11:14, I came in 16th in a time of 10:32 and Caron came in 75th overall, in a time of 15:55, there were 91 finishers. Full results to follow on BOFRA and a bit of race action here.

  1. Certainly was an eye-opener-enjoyable though! Good running as always from Tom and quite scary running into the field at the end with so many people watching.

  2. I have just watched the video , what a fantastic fell race and Caron R. did great running in 15.55 , it is an extraordinary result in such hard race , she is a running hero . Also Tom L. ran well . Two powerful performances , well done indeed you two .

  3. Top effort Team Otley – I’ve just watched the vids. Less blood loss than my efforts! Good to have done it though!
