Report from Joanna Hobson:
On Saturday 3rd September I took part in the Derwentwater Trails 15k challenge in Keswick (actually 16k due to alternative route) Although I did this race last year, the course had changed considerably due to Storm Desmond. Unfortunately this part of the Lakes has suffered badly and several landslides & broken bridges meant the organisers had to find an alternative route for the first 4K. And this they did by utilising the muddiest, wettest, sloppiest, hilliest log trails through Brandholme woods which made for a very interesting first 4ks! Great fun was had by everybody as we crawled up the hills with mud to our knees ! The route then returned to the original path and we started climbing until we reached the infamous bottomless bogs of Glenderaterra beck. Another chance to get absolutely soaked! We climbed again to Lonscale Fell & eventually rewarded with amazing views from Lonscale Fell down towards Derwentwater. A lovely downhill 3k took us back in to Fitz Park to the magnificent sound of the Batala Band. I finished in a time of 1:58:50 172nd/ 442 finishers. First male was Rhys Jones U/A 1:21:53 & first female was Helen Smith U/A in 1:26:06. An amazing route & definitely to be recommended & repeated another year.
