Sunday 18th June – Buckden Pike Fell Race

Report from Graham Lake

The scorching hot weather that had been forecast appeared in time for this dales fell race. Upper Wharfedale is gorgeous at this time of year, and it didn’t disappoint. The race is part of Buckden Gala, so registration was in amongst the ‘Best Swaledale’ and ‘dog most like it’s owner’ competitions.

Liam and Antonio and ex-OAC Sam Stell were there too. As there was an FRA champs race on over at Tebay there was a smaller field than usual.

The climb out of the village is brutal, very little running, much sweating. Liam passed me 3/4 way up the Pike and sped off in to the distance eventually pipping Sam to 7th place in 42.43; first v40. On the descent I had a battle with 18 y/o Lucy Haines of Ilkley who absolutely stormed down the final hill/cliff to beat me and pip another very impressive junior for 1st place. The overall race was won by Jack Cummings also of Ilkley in 37.14. I finished 13th in 44.10 with Antonio 75th, 1.37.

Well done everyone especially Antonio. Buckden Pike is hard enough to walk up even in cool weather! Not sure about long sleeves and tracky bottoms though: maybe heat is all relative.

Too kind Howard , I have got to admit that I never ever saw a steep hill like the Buckden Pike , just brutal . Liam D. had a spendid run in 42.43 , also Graham L. had a strong fell race finishing in the gala field in 44.10 , also his short report is good .
