Saturday 23rd September – Great Whernside Fell Race (English and Yorks. Champs)

Report from Tom Lynch:

This year Great Whernside was selected as an English and Yorkshire Championship race, constituting the last English champs race of the season. The race is a 4 mile/6 ish km race to the top of Great Whernside and back over a mixture of grassy slopes, sloppy bog, rocky bits and a fun quick very steep descent to the finish line. The descent half of the race is very quick and almost all runnable. Sam Tosh (Rossendale Harriers) was the winner of the race in 29:25 and he also took the English Championship with the race win. The race was split into seperate men’s and women’s races, and the winner of the women’s event was Katie Walshaw (Ribble Valley Harriers) in 36:19, also taking the Yorkshire Championship title. Tom Adams won the men’s Yorkshire Championship.

  1. The only trouble with an out and back route Tom is that the leaders may spit at you on there way back whilst you are still climbing up to the trig Ha ha

  2. I did the same course a few weeks before with the Wharfedale H. the Uphill and it was lovely and dry , no bogs , no mud at all , a different story this time on the Great Whernside , it was very wet , and very boggy , especially after the youth hostel house , I was really struggling after being trapped in waist high bogs . Andrew R. is back in form with a powerful performance and crossed the finish line in 37.07 , also Tom L. ran strongly in this championship race in 39.00 and as well Steve R. ran a superb fell race in a high quality field of competitors .

  3. Great runs, especially from the OWH. Does this mean more beastings on the Chevin then Andrew?
