Report from Billy
On leaving Otley with Vicky Stainburn we thought we were in for a hot day but arriving at Beckwithshaw it was foggy and cold. The damp cricket pitch and the number of cars skidding trying to park up were an indication of the wet/muddy conditions that lay ahead. We soon met up with Joanna H, Sara R, Nicky G, Lizzie I, Rob F, Rogan A and Phil R shortly before the start. As start time approached the sun was starting to burn off the fog and slowly making an appearance.
The race started on the road outside the cricket club heading steeply downhill then uphill towards the A59 for about half a mile before turning left on to a farm track. The route took us through my cousin’s farm the along the edge of the empty Beaverdyke Reservoir and John ‘O’ Gaunts Reservoir towards the Sun Inn. There were plenty of boggy bits to slow us down and keep us on our toes. The halfway point and water station was in the field behind the Sun Inn at Norwood. This is traditionally boggy with reeds growing in the field but didn’t seem too bad today. As I approached a particularly wet bit I knew I would get my feet wet but was taken aback as I sank right up to my knees. After the water station we climbed the hill and headed towards Brown Bank Farm (my father’s childhood home) and then onto John ‘O’ Gaunts Castle before crossing the dam between John ‘O’ Gaunts and Beaverdyke and heading back towards Beckwithshaw. It was at John ‘O’ Gaunts that Sara Richard caught me up but I managed to hold her off until the finish. Sara was followed home by Joanna, Rob and Nicky. Finishing in front of me were Rogan, Lizzie (3rd lady), Vicky (4th lady I think) and Phil.
For completing the race we received a drinks bottle, bottle of beer and goody bag including a very tasty pork pie.
A thoroughly enjoyable local race that I would recommend.
The race was won by Jack Wood of Ilkley in 1:02:52 and 1st lady was Alice Leake of Leeds City in 1:12:52.
For Otley Rogan Ashton was 13th in 1:12:29, Lizzie Irvine 29th (3rd lady) in 1:19:02, Vicky Stainburn 35th (4th lady) in 1:21:18, Phil Robinson 116th in 1:41:54, Andrew Rayner (Billy) 128th in 1:47:04, Sara Richard 133rd in 1:48:16, Joanna Hobson 135th in 1:49:19, Rob Fearnley 137th in 1:49:43 and Nicky Gifford 144th in 1:54:08 (25 seconds quicker than last year in worse conditions)
