Report from Matt Podd:
Felt a bit of a Howard moment as I prepared for this by running Bradford Parkrun at a steady pace. Lovely to see the look of pain on Sara’s face as she achieved a pb. Where are you Howard? We miss you comprehensive reports – injured?
I was supposed to be going camping in the Brecon Beacons this weekend, but Brian put pay to that plan. So at a loose end I found this race which had entry on the day. Am I trained up for a 15 mile race – I think not, but it should be fun! Though the weather was not as bad as predicted, it was still not very pleasant. Cold, wet and windy, but plenty of vest and shorts merchants desperately racing hypothermia.
The course is two laps of a circuit from Holmfirth, through Brockholes and down to Honley and back up the valley to Holmfirth, with an initial short (hilly) loop to make up the distance. Quite a hilly course with some long slow drags running along the side of a busy main road, and a vicious short hill that was climbed twice – once at about 13.5 miles, which was fun. We passed the tail of the 10Km race running at the same time. A few 10K runners missed the start and had a challenging run to catch up with the field.
I plodded round in a steady style a bit unsure of how to pace it and finished in about 2hrs 10mins. A good run out, though as Mark Hall said two years ago this is an expensive race. It’s now gone up £2 to £19, but we got a lovely hat.
