Tuesday 26th December – Chevin Chase

Report from Rob Fearnley

The Chevin Chase. The one everyone wants to be in when entries open in October. The one no one wants to be in as they pop a final chocolate orange segment in their gob at 11.30pm on Christmas Day to top off the Turkey dinner, yule log and copious amounts of booze they’ve already forced down their neck.

A solid turnout of 20 or so Black & Whites were present on the start line this year for what turned out to be pretty favourable conditions for the time of year despite a pre-race deluge that churned up some of the trails. Some were taking it slightly more seriously than others and looking for a good time on a challenging course whereas one or two of us were just happy to be dry.

The massed start was followed as always by the clogging up of Carlton Lane by people dressed as Santa, Elves, Christmas turkeys, fairies and extras from Top Gun before the inevitable bottle neck on Mall Lane gave those of who were still struggling with the previous day’s excesses a welcome breather. Hannah Lupton in particular was looking a particularly festive shade of green by this point.

The leaders were by now well on their way down the Bridleway that connects East and West Chevin and hurtling across the sloppy filth of Danefield before charging back into the Quarry Car Park and on towards the White House.

By this point, those of us in fancy dress were well and truly flagging and walking was the preferred option as we headed back up towards Surprise View, greeted by a smug looking Andrew Robertshaw and a gang of rabid Otley AC supporters. With the Royalty (and no more climbing) a welcome sight for most, the leaders were now hurtling down Moor Lane and heading for home at the school. Otley were ably lead home by Tom Midgley, Gary Johnson and Graham Lake with less than 4 minutes between them.

The t-shirts were once again excellent and beer as well as water was gratefully received by finishers. Yet again a great atmosphere on of the highlights of the racing year where fun is every bit as important as your finishing time.

  1. I was at the start as well , although I could not get a registration number in October , on the start I met the new Otley AC girl Sarah F. coming from another running club in Middle England , she is a good runner and a very social person . In my fiftys I used to run the Chevin Chase in around 60 minutes , now near my seventys last Tuesday I did the 7 miles at the very back with two runners from Huddersfield and it took me 1:44 . I liked the bad boy Rob F.’s fancy dress especially his hair and as well his report of the race is awesome . Laura M. did a super race in 55.56 not bad at all , and as well former boss Matt P. is in great shape , his time of 59.28 is really good . Well done all.
