Northern Cross Country – Harewood House

Northern Cross Country – Harewood House

The Northern cross country gave Otley folk a new perspective to the grounds of Harewood House.  The organisers produced a classic course of just 2 laps for both senior races.  Lots of hills, energy sapping soft going all round the lap, with a few muddier patches thrown in.  As with the Yorkshire’s is was great to see the Black vests 🙂 of Otley represented in the majority of the races throughout the day.  See a full results on Northern Athletics here.

The senior women had a great day finishing 19th team with Vicky Stainburn first home in 68th, 36:10 followed by Laura McCabe 108th 38:23,  Louise Williams 146th 39:54,  Sara Elliott 175th 40:54,  Rachael Wright 204th 41:44,  Madeleine DeLucchi 410th 55:57 and Victoria Taylor 431st 1:05:21.  Mhairi Maclennan from Morpeth H. won 18 seconds clear of Lauren Howarth, Leigh H.

The final race of the day came down to battle on the last lap between early leader Matthew Bowser, Lincoln Wellington and Carl Avery, Morpeth.  On the last long climb Matthew Bowser suddenly started limping quite badly but somehow managed to hang on to the top of the climb.  However Carl Avery surged into a clear lead on the descent to the gate finishing with a four second lead in a time of 39:50.  Gary Johnson had the honour of being first home for Otley in 260th 50:03 followed by Graham Lake 372nd 53:59,  Stephen Boddy, (currently missing from the results,  most likely Steve Boddy, Gosforth 497th 56:12 ??),  Nick Hodgkinson 755th 1:18:39 and Antonio Cardinale 761st 1:42:03.  President Billy unfortunately had to pull up with an injury on the first lap.

Runour has it that next year Harewood hosts the National Cross Country, the training starts now, one not to be missed, see more photos on the club Flickr site here.

  1. Thinking back, it was a really good course! A bit of everything, a really long muddy climb to start, very muddy section, then a steeper climb to some better running around the top section with a couple of nice fast downhills before the final stinging climb and descent through the pond to the pond and finish. Hated it at the time mind you!
Thanks to the Robertshaws and Brogdens for support and photos.
I’d recommend these champs races, so well organised and fun to watch the other races too.
I did have to get my van dragged out of the carpark at the end for some extra fun!

  2. That wasn’t me on the results. I had a timing chip mishap. Bizarrely, a completely different Stephen Boddy ran the race 1 second faster than me. If I’d have known that at the time I would have tried a sprint finish.

  3. I agree with Mark H. about the ladies team had a great day , especially the powerful Vicky S. crossing the finishing line in a super 36.10 , also Victoria T. ran strongly in this long cross country with a good time of 1.05 . It is indeed a shame that our President Billy R. had to retire for a knee injury , get well soon Billy . It was lovely to see the friendly faces of Kath R. and Jack R. encouraging me in a difficult moment of the 1 lap , also Andrew R. was there . Well done all .
