Saturday 24th February: National Cross Country Race Parliament Hill, London

Two powerful Otley AC teams made the long trip down to London for the National Cross Country Race (Although I got a number 44 bus from Battersea)

The Otley AC Senior Ladies Team (aka Rachael Wright) had a stonking run, coming in 654th place, out of 1113, in a time of 42:54 (The winner was Phoebe Law from Kingston AC in a time of 28:33.) Rachaels great race was even more brilliant because she carried two small kittens round with her!!

The Otley AC Senior Mens Team (aka me) had not such a stonking run, but I still enjoyed myself. I finished in 2286th place, out of 2328, in a time of 1:19:19 (The winner was Adam Hicky from Southend on sea AC in a time of 39:35.) Also making an appearance was second claim Ian Fisher, who was still alongside me towards the end of my second lap.

For anyone who wants to call themselves a runner, this is a must-do event. My last appearance was some time around 1995, so I had already ticked off this requirement. However, it really is an awesome event and I got tempted back. The uphill ‘battle charge’ for the first bend is a sight to be seen!

Rumour has it that next years race will be in Harewood, so there is no reason for two, even more powerful, Otley AC teams next year? And maybe a contingent of Juniors?

  1. A very humorous report from London by our Nick that made me chuckle . Rachael W. ran a fabulous cross country , her 42.54 is really good and achieved in a field of high quality runners . Also Nick ran well with the company of Ian Fisher , still together at the the end of the second lap , although I am confident that our Ian had a slightly different stride . Well done you three .
