More 5k Ramblings from Tony Walker
Life always seems so busy (generally in a good way!) so fitting races (and runs in general) can often be a challenge. So when I saw a 6pm Saturday evening start I thought surely nothing can conflict with that! So over the border into Lancashire avoiding the bandits off I went for some chest expanding fast 5k running. The podium 5ks are set up similar to the ones at the Brownlee centre in Adel. This one is just under 5 laps of a flat cycle track to get your exact 5k. I may have said this before but I do love a no hiding place blast. There are 2 races under 18 mins and over 18mins. I was in the latter. Off we sprinted and I felt ok. But still after 800m or so I thought can I keep this up. Somehow I did keep the effort going to arrive at the ‘bell’ a shade under 16mins. Head down for one last effort and clocked 18mins…and 59 seconds. That’ll do for me! The standard though is high so although not bad for a V55 I was still nearly 3 mins behind the first V55 and that’s without Mark Hall!!!The A race by the way was won in 14.18 by Olympian Lom Lancashire. Several people under 15 mins. They moved quick! Only around 80 in the 2 races gave it a real old fashioned low key atmosphere – although with so few runners I ended up doing most of the race on my own – and with only an on the day 5 pound entry, lots to like about it if you want a change from park runs.
