Gisborough Moors Fell Race – 12.5 miles 2600ft ascent

Report from Graham Lake:

As I had some free time while the kids were at Grandma’s I thought I’d give this race a go. 12 miles is further than I normally race, so I took it easy for the first section up through the woods and over the open moor, basking in the rare sun and having a good look round at the gorgeous North Yorkshire Moors, watching the line of runners snaking away in front and behind was quite a sight.

There are essentially 4 climbs on this race, the second comes near half way, where a steep road, then trail lead to the top of Easby Moor where Captain Cook’s monument stands looking at the Tees plain, and over to the next objective of Roseberry Topping. Full kit was stipulated, so I had quite a heavy bag, but I was sweating in shorts and vest, and the water station at Gribdale Gate was a welcome sight. I was now pushing on, and managed to pull away from the group I was running with. Then on the, relatively short, ascent up the back of Roseberry Topping I managed to overhaul a few more places, so felt I was pacing it well.

The fourth climb is up to High Cliff Nab which overlooks Guisborough (I haven’t mis-spelled the race name btw, the ‘u’ was added to the town name, but moor and hall still have original spelling). This climb was relatively easy going, but two runners ahead were really struggling and walking this section. I was pretty much on my own now, and had to keep a sharp look-out for the tape in the woods in case I went wrong at the last minute, but I managed to negotiate the horrendously muddy track to finish in, I think, 48th position in about 1hr 49.

There were 2 other Otley runners there, Colin Best, resplendent in vest and gloves, plus new member (or soon to be?) Jo Torr who had a good run finishing 6 minutes or so ahead of me.

*****Results now out*****

The race was won by Nick Swinburn of Morpeth Harriers in 1.24.03

First Lady was Emma Holt also of Morpeth Harriers in 1.41.10

For Otley AC:

48th Graham Lake  1.49.36

163rd Colin Best 2.21.53

Soon to be member Joe Torr finished in 21st place in 1.43.05

  1. I liked your report from Gisborough Moors and your time of 1.49 is great for a distance of 12.5miles and 2600ft of ascent , considering the very muddy course and the challenging course too , you did well . Welcome to our club to the strong Jo T. and well done to Graham L. and to the fell runner Colin B.
