Sunday 29th April – Blakey Blitz Fell Race 17K

Report from Colin Best

This was the race rearranged from the training weekend in March. I wonder why it was postponed!

I was keen to give it ago then so thought I would make the effort this time. I was joined by Chris Brunold and Chris Taylor so an early start was required.

We arrived in good time and were greeted by a squally sleet shower and a temperature of 4. Fortunately it was only a shower or 2 but Blakey ridge is very exposed and it was very cold.

Unusually the race starts at more or less its highest point so the start is along steep downhill to the valley bottom. This was the route back as well so the finish promised to be quite a challenge.

It was a steady climb back up out of the valley before a long undulating section across the moor before a muddy descent into the next valley. Looking ahead I could see the steep ascent ahead. Fuel needed so a quick drink and a handful of nuts onwards and upwards.

The route back from there was nearly the same as out and as I approached the final climb I managed to pass a couple of runners. This was prove very profitable as one of them was in my age category and on finishing discovered I had won a prize. I was told I was 2nd V60.

Chris B and Chris T finished a little behind. Unfortunately we had to stop for a drink in the delightful Lion Inn to await prize giving as a bottle of wine awaited.

1st Stuart Grange York Knavesmire MO 1.28.04

1st lady Kim Spence Valley Striders F40 1.49.15

69th Colin Best Otley AC V60 2.08.59

81st Chris Brunold Otley AC F50 2.23.42

89th Chris Taylor Otley AC MO 2.32.20

Not say anything but results show I was 3rd V60 Chris B was 3rd F50

Hope not have to give back the wine.

  1. I liked the report from the race by Colin B. and also his finishing time of 2.08 it is a strong one indeed for a tough 11 miles , and Chris B. did well too crossing the finishing line in 2.23 , and as well Chris T. had a good run in 2.32 a great time too.
