Saturday 4th August – Borrowdale Fell Race

Report from Joe Torr:

Borrowdale Fell Race AL – 16 miles 6500 ft

After doing no specific training for Borrowdale I’d forgotten how hard the race was since four years previous. After having a good climb up Bessyboot and run around Glaramara and up on to Scafell I was feeling pretty good and chatting to a bloke from Nottingham about finishing in 3.45. After coming off the corridor route and starting up Great Gable I ran out of water and proceeded to crash to spectacular fashion. “Running” around Green Gable, Tom overtook me looking remarkably spritely and took pity on me letting me have some of his water. Having collected some more water from Tanya, two children handing out cups and a fruit shoot from a stranger at Honister I trudged up and managed said trudge up and down Dale Head and managed to drag myself to the finish having lost about 50 places and ending up finishing in 4.26. A good day out all in all.

Winner of the race was Ricky Lightfoot (Ellenborough AC) in 2:51:59, first woman was Jasmin Paris (Carnethy) in 3:32:36. For Otley: 79th Tom Lynch 4:04:13, 112th Joe Torr 4:26:23.

  1. 4.04 is a fabulous time to do , what a fell runner Tom L. is , an extraordinary run over a complicated terrain with 6500ft of climbing . A good report from Borrowdale by Joe T. and as well he did a strong performance crossing the finishing line in 4.26 , not bad at all for 16 miles of hard going .
