Saturday 25th August – Burnsall Sports – Road 10Mile, Fell 1.5M 899ft

Report from Stephen Boddy:

International man of mystery, Antonio Cardinale cemented himself further into Otley AC folklore by completing the notoriously challenging ‘Burnsall double’, a day’s running even Darren Fishwick would be proud of. This involves running the undulating 10 mile road race at 2pm and following on to the Fell race which starts at 4.30pm. Antonio completed the double in style and with a smile on his face, even maintaining his composure enough to change vests in between races from his white road vest to his black fell number. Watching Antonio warm up for the Fell race, it is clear how popular a figure he is in the running community with so many runners from other clubs giving him a nod and a smile as he trotted past. Molto bene Antonio.

The road race saw the welcome return to racing for Richard Smith who eased himself into competitive action with a 7th placed finish, completing the route in 62 mins. He was followed home by Graham Lake and Rogan Ashton who both came in well under 70mins on a tough course. Chris Chambers was next for the Black and Whites, then Sara Elliott, the sole female representative on the day, and Billy Raynor, David Cattenach and Antonio.

Fell Race:
Stephen Boddy and Tom Pomfrett were joined in the Fell Race by aforementioned Antonio and Graham Lake, who was also doing the double, presumably to justify the refuelling he would undertake later that evening (don’t know what you mean – ed). Stephen and Tom were both thankful they lived to tell the tale after encountering the hair raising Burnsall descent for the first time. The Fell race was won by Sam Tosh in an eye watering 14:04 and the Ladies’ race was won but the indomitable Victoria Wilkinson, who set a course record of 15:58 in the process; a record which had stood for 35 years!.

  1. Thank you Stephen for the kind words in your report , I really appreciate your comments on my day in Burnsall . To be honest after the 10 miles road race , I felt really tired and I was all wobbly and I could hardly stand up , but because I will be 70 in a few months , I thought it could have been my last chance to do the double and also because I did not want to waste the six pounds paid in advance , so after the road race I went to my car ,changed my vest , washed my face , and off I went to the fell race start , struggling to walk , never mind climbing the hill . Sara E. ran a super 10 miles in 1.12 , a great performance indeed for Sara . Our President Billy R. did a solid race finishing in 1.34 a good time too . Graham L . is a powerhouse , he ran the road race in a fabulous 1.05 and the fell in an extraordinary 21.50 . Stephen B. was flying down the very steep and dangerous downhill , his 21.35 is fast . Well done all .
