Report from Billy
Sunday morning myself, Sara Elliott and Peter Gosling travelled over to the beautiful village of Bishop Monkton for the inaugural Beck Busters 10k organised by the Friends of Bishop Monkton School. After collecting our numbers we bumped into Don Buffham and Bob Baker. After a short warm up on the field at the rear of the school we made our way to the start just inside the school gates. The start was narrow but we soon had space as we turned onto the Boroughbridge Road for a couple kilometres before turning on to a track towards the River Ure before running up the side of a lock on to the towpath of the Ripon Canal. After a while the towpath crossed to the other side via a small humpbacked bridge and I managed to pass Don Bufham. At the next humpbacked bridge we crossed the canal once again and headed up to the village of Littlethorpe. After about 7.5k we turned off the road on to a rough track back towards the river. Sensing Don on my shoulder I pushed along and 8k passed a lady in fron of me as we were approach a gate next to a cattle grid. Here I lost my footing and took a tumble and Don managed to pass me after enquiring if I was Ok. I got to my feet and set off at steadier pace. At 9k my laces came undone and lost further time. On entering Bishop Monkton we had to run through the stream flowing through the village, up and down the main street either side of the stream before turning back into the school for the finish. Here, to cap a miserable last 2k for me an unsupervised child tried his best to trip me up by crossing the entrance to the school to get to his mother without looking to see if any runners were coming! Despite the last 2k the course is lovely and was well marshalled and we received a medal, water, sausage roll, banana and Tote Bag containing chocolate, buff and Yorkshire Tea :-).
The race was won by Reece Dalton of Richmond & Zetland Harriers in 35:37 and 1st lady was Crystal Goecker of Harrogate Harriers in 40:47.
