Sunday 30th September – Pontefract Half Marathon

Report from Phil Robinson

The second running of this newish event attracted a good-sized field, but parking and registration was straightforward. Richard Hamer had proposed travelling together but set his alarm for the wrong time… oh Richard! … so Otley A.C. was represented by Deb, Josie and me. Taking in the fine old town centre the route headed south and west to one-time rugby league stronghold Featherstone, then round by Ackworth and Wentbridge back to finish in a couple of loops around Ponte’s pedestrianised shopping area. Deb was pleased with her excellent first half-marathon result, I think Josie improved substantially on her previous time, and I was satisfied with mine. With the 8.30am kick-off, there was time to drive home, shower and change before catching up with Richard and Tom Hannah’s Sunday group in the pub.

Results (TBC since we’re told there were issues with recording):

1        Daniel Franks        1.14.50

222    Deb Bassett          1.48.34

297    Phil Robinson         1.53.43

527    Josie Smith           2.09.09

727 finishers.

  1. I know that 8.30am is a bit early in the morning , but I like it, when races start early on because when the race is over, you have got the rest of the day for you to spend as you like. Powerful racing by Phil R. who went to the finish in 1.53, leaving behind 430 runners who would have loved to beat him . Josie S. had a good running morning in Pontefract , her 2.09 is not bad at all , she still left 200 people to finish after she crossed the finish line . Also Deb B. did a strong race finishing with a fast 1.48.
