Report from Tony Walker
Having had to abort a couple of pre-entered 10ks – the second one due to gout on the day, ouch! – I finally had a free Sunday and looked for a good race. I woke up expecting to do the Wistow 10k but then thought I’d better check if you can enter on the day. Good job I did because you couldn’t. So plan B was Accrington.
I used to live over that part of the world so saw a few old faces – and they are old faces now!! I also saw Russell Brogden (who has a young face) and assume the lads were doing a shorter race but don’t know as we never see junior stuff on the main website. I really want to see how the youngsters are getting on. They are the future!!!
I was wary of this race because the last time I did it I remember a loooonggg hill around 4-5 miles and it was horrible. However they had changed the start and although predominately the same course the ‘hill’ was on early on in the race…phew.
So I set off steady just behind the 40 minute pacer which was obviously too quick. So what did I do. I overtake the pacer!!!. Honestly after 40 years of racing you would think I would know better. Anyway the pacer duly caught me 2/3rds up the ‘hill’ and duly disappeared. Nevertheless I held a pace and didn’t lose any more places and with a downhill last mile was able to manage a spurt and finish with a chip time of 41 minutes and 1 second. I could have found 2 seconds from somewhere if I’d known! My fastest for a decade so was happy.
A really good event, well attended and with officials constantly asking of you needed help – really pleasant and recommended. The announcer also had a thing of picking out slightly different looking vests so Otley AC was mentioned a few times and without any prompting he announced everybody should do the Otley 10!!!
Winner was Ben Fish from Blackburn – a multiple winner I believe – in a sprightly 31.32 with first lady Anne-Marie Hindle from Rossendale in 42.32.
