Sunday 30th December – Jolly Holly Jog

Report from Howard:

A new ‘figure of eight’ course for this 31st running of the JHJ and a first time sell out, with a field of 796 finishers. The weather was mild and sunny. I am up to my full training schedule albeit with a few bits of downtime over the festive period. There was no zip in the legs from the start so it felt like a hard grind on not a disagreeable route or surface till about 7K. Then it got tougher with a long steep hill through the woods that previously you came down and then down through a wet and muddy field to the road that leads downhill towards the finish. A welcome bit of encouragement from Tom coming out of the woods but I could make no inroads into John’s lead which he had from 1K despite a reasonably strong finish. The race was won by Matthew Grieve of Leeds City AC in 34.37, first lady was Charlotte Mason of City of York AC 21st in 40.56.
Yorkshire cross country championships next Saturday and the first outing for the new year and a happy one to all.

  1. I agree with Howard on a happy new year to all club members , and about the new course it reminds me of the Ripon Handicap of the Harrogate League . The new F60 Carol A. did a powerful 10k in this tough route finishing in a brilliant 56.13 , also Hannah L. did a splendid performance crossing the finish line in a solid time of 1.03 . Our Howard J. had a robust race in a muddy course finishing in 47.25 , Howard long stride is really good on the tarmac , instead John A. is a fell runner , so the muddy footpath is just his kind of terrain , his 45.17 is super good . Well done to everyone .
