Saturday 23 February – High Cup Nick Fell Race

Report from Steve Robinson

My Cousin (Black Combe Runners) persuaded me to drive over to Cumbria last weekend to take part in the High Cup Nick Fell Race. I haven’t raced much recently so I knew 15km/9.3mile – 460m/1509ft AM Fell Race was going to hurt. The weather was amazing for February and well over 400 runners descended on a little village called Dufton to make the start line. This is a spectacular part of the world and some of the route is used in the opening credits of Countryfile. The first 5/6 miles or so is a continuous steady climb on open Moor crossing bogs and streams before finally ramping up to High Cup Nick. From here, those of you that like descending, must have a crack at this race, it’s over 5km of the fastest terrain for a fell race that you can imagine, mostly along The Pennine way. The race record fell on the day and looking at the leaders Strava times, they were clocking sub 16mins for that final 5km decent!!

  1. It is a tough fell race indeed , with 1509 ft to climb and 9.3 miles long , although recently you have not done many races , your time of 1.33 is quite good . Well done to Steve R. and as well to Tania S. who finished in a strong 1.52 and to Simon F. too who did a fast race in 1.35.
